Corene Hamre, 94, of Spring Valley, Minn., died on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at Spring Valley Living.
Corene Owens was born on September 16, 1927, in Hale, Mo., to Dewey and Opal (Crase) Owens. After graduating from Rapidan High School in 1945, she then attended Mankato State Teachers College. On July 26, 1952, she was united in marriage to Joseph Hamre in Mankato. Corene worked as a cook for the Ostrander Nursing Home and the Spring Valley Hospital. She also helped her husband on the farm in later years.
Corene was quite talented when it came to quilting, knitting and crafts. She enjoyed spending her free time socializing, having coffee at Big Bob’s, and playing cards. At the age of 90, she bowled a score of 199. Corene kept busy in the kitchen baking, canning, and making jellies and jams. For over 20 years, she wintered in Arizona. She was a passionate Twins fan and an avid reader. Corene served as a 4-H leader and was a member of Eastern Star, the Legion Auxiliary, and UMW. She and Joseph also served as foster parents for several children over the years.
Corene is survived by her children Stephen (Rayna) Hamre of Huntington Beach, Callif., Mary (Bill) Stroeing of Pine City, Minn., and Robert (Kathleen) Hamre of Rochester, Minn.; five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Joe on December 22, 2012, grandson Troy, two brothers, Robert and Homer; older sister Maxine, and her twin sister Lorene.
Funeral services for Corene will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 22, 2022, at Cherry Grove United Methodist Church, with Pastor Deanna Woodward officiating. Burial will take place in Etna Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, April 21 at Hindt Funeral Home in Spring Valley.
