Burro Boys Knock Off Lyle/Pacelli, Run Streak to Six

February 7, 2022 by Paul Trende

In an upset win that sent ripples particularly in the SEC-West, Lanesboro’s boys (3-4, 7-5) trekked to Austin and took out West leading Lyle/Pacelli (6-0, 11-2). The Burro guards were the difference. The Athletics led by as many as eight in the first half, including 36-28 just before intermission. But Matt Asleson’s group ended the stanza strong, and started the second half the same, going on a 19-4 run. They turned that 36-28 deficit into a 47-40 led. The Burros then led the rest of the way, save for L/P taking a brief 51-50 lead. Lanesboro led 60-55 with 2:17 left only for L/P to score the next two field goals and trail 60-59 (0:26). But L/P then got called for an intentional foul. Burro junior forward Logan Torgerson made two free throws (0:24.8) to make it 62-59. Lanesboro kept possession, got fouled, but missed front end of a 1-and-1. L/P missed two threes in the final 0:13.5. Team Burro prevailed 62-59. John Prestemon (14 pts, 7 rebs, 8 asts, 7 stls) led the way. Five more Burros scored at least eight; Mason Howard (10 pts), Parker Storhoff (10 pts), Stephan Schultz (10 pts, 5-7 FGs), Reece Benson (9 pts, 3-4 threes), and Torgerson (8 pts, 5 rebs). Turnovers (L 13, L/P 19), offensive rebounds (L 12, L/P 10), second-chance points (L 10, L/P 4), and shots-taken (L 27 of 62 > 44%; L/P 22 of 47 > 47%) were key stats. The Burros then made up a postponed “Border Battle” game with MFL-Mar Mac and posted a 53-45 win. After a tight first half, Lanesboro led 38-21 in the third quarter. MFL-Mar Mac came back to get within one as late as 46-45. The Burros scored the final seven to preserve victory. Howard (17 pts, 3-7 threes, 4-4 FTs, 6 rebs), Prestemon (11 pts, 7 rebs, 4 asts), and Schultz (10 pts) hit double figures. Storhoff added 6 (pts), 9 (rebs), and 5 (asts). Lanesboro hit 12 of 14 free throws (86%) to MFL’s 5 of 14 (36%). The Burros (4-4, 9-5) have won six straight.
