Massive Week for Caledonia Hoopsters
It was a momentous week for Caledonia boys and girls basketball. There were big wins and three personal milestones were accomplished. On Monday, the #6 in Class AA Warrior girls took on #2 in Class A Mayer Lutheran (13-1). The Crusaders came in having won 11 in a row, Caledonia seven in a row. Scott Sorenson’s group made a first half statement, building a 42-20 lead. For the game Caledonia hit 12 threes to ML’s five. Junior Aubrie Klug dropped 29 points (six threes). Nicole Banse tied her season-high with 21 points, Josie Foster added 16, each hitting three threes. The rest of the long Warriors helped ‘D’ up in a big 74-49 win. Mayer Lutheran scored 18 points at the charity stripe with just 13 made field goals. A night later, Caledonia’s teams played Chatfield. A pair of siblings topped 1,000 career points the same night. Klug ripped to 26 more points (11-21 FGs, 4-11 threes, 7 rebs). A bank-in three in the first half gave her 1,000. It was her eighth straight game with at least 22 points (28 PPG average). Teamwise, Caledonia had a 39-0 first-half run for a 55-12 halftime lead in a 76-45 win. The victory gave Coach Sorenson his 400th career “W.” Banse (19 pts, 6-9 FGs, 5 stls) also reached double-figures. Foster (9 pts, 6 asts, 6 stls), Sienna Augedahl (9 pts, 5 rebs, 4 stls), and Jessica Stendel (8 pts, 5 rebs) helped team Cal. Grace Schroeder (13 pts, 3-7 threes) and Amaya Harmening (7 pts, 12 rebs) led Chatfield. In Caledonia, the senior-led Warrior boys downed the young Gophers, 99-35. It was Caledonia’s highest out-put of the season and third 90-plus point game. Reid Klug, a 6’5” senior forward, scored 14 points (four threes) and surpassed 1,000 for his career. He joined sister Aubrie in doing so the same night. Already 1,000-point scoring Mason King led the Warriors with 21 points. Garrett Konz (16 pts), Coby Hammell (13 pts), Zeke Gengler (11 pts), and Grant King (9 pts) also helped the cause. Carson Harstad (12 pts) and Kash McBroom (9 pts, 3-3 threes) led the Gophers. Caledonia’s teams then took on Cotter. The girls game pitted the TRC-East leading #6 Warriors (10-0, 17-2) versus the second place Ramblers (7-2, 11-6). In an intense defensive struggle with 50 turnovers, the long Warriors fought through the game Ramblers. Finishing the first half on a mini 7-2 run, Caledonia led 23-19 at the half. Cotter tied it twice right after intermission. The teams battled against each other’s defenses, Ramblers pressing and applying ball pressure, Warriors using their position and length to limit Cotter quality shots. Banse and Elsa Blum, Warrior supplementary shooters, each hit a key second half three. Blum’s put the Warriors up 39-30 (6:08). Banse scored six points down the stretch, including a pair of o-board put-backs. The Warriors controlled the glass 36 to 26 including offensively 20 to 8. Team Cal toughed out a 52-37 win, ending the game scoring 18 of the final 25 points. Banse (14 pts, 9 rebs), who had 23 in last year’s win over the Ramblers, led Caledonia. Cotter’s defense limited Klug (11 pts) and Foster (10 pts, 7 rebs). Blum scored eight off the bench. Kensey King added 6 (pts) and 10 (rebs). Cotter top player Clarissa Sauer led all scorers (19 pts). The win gives Caledonia (11-0, 18-2) a guaranteed share of the East title, as they lead Cotter (7-3, 11-7) and R-P (7-3, 9-6) by three games with three to go. Meanwhile, the boys easily handled Cotter, 89-47. M-King scored 26 points and Klug 20 to lead the way. Ethan Stendel added 16.
