Six Game Win Streak Propels R-P Over 20 Wins
It has been a good year for a young Rushford-Peterson boys basketball team. A 3-0 week brought their win streak to six, as Chris Drinkall’s Trojans surpassed 20 wins on the year. R-P sandwiched TRC wins over La Crescent/Hokah and Cotter around a non-conference victory over Grand Meadow. Versus the Lancers, sophomore Carson Johnson scored an efficient 24 points (8-12 FGS, 7-9 FTs, 6 rebs) to lead the way in an 83-59 win. Will LaFleur (18 pts, 6-8 FTs), Zach Baker (10 pts, 3-4 FGs, 4-4 FTs, 4 rebs, 4 asts), and Cayden Lea (9 pts, 3-5 threes, 6 asts) also did work. The Trojans hit 55% of their field goals (28 of 51), 42% of their threes (8 of 19), and 83% of their free throws (19 of 23). Versus the Larks, R-P led 37-10 at intermission. Twelve Trojans scored as they shot 55% (30 of 55) overall in a 73-30 win. Cole Thompson (15 pts, 4-6 threes, 5-7 FGs) was leading scorer, followed by LaFleur (9 pts), Lea (9 pts, 4 stls), Landon Dahl (9 pts, 4-5 FGs), and Car. Johnson (7 pts, 4 stls). Carter Glynn (12 pts, 6 rebs) was the only Lark in double figures. Logan Grafe added 6 (pts) and 7 (rebs). Team Green then finished the regular season topping Cotter 70-53. LaFleur’s night keyed the win (26 pts, 9-12 FGs, 4-6 threes, 4-6 FTs, 4 asts). Lea (15 pts, 3-4 threes, 6 stls) also hit double figures. Car. Johnson (6 pts, 7 rebs, 7 asts) and Baker (8 pts, 4-5 FGs) helped. R-P again shot 50% (28 of 56 FGs). They are averaging 76 points per game making eight-plus threes (37% clip). The Trojans (10-4, 21-4) are 1A’s 3-seed, will host either 14-seed M-C (9-17) or 19-seed Faribault B.A. (2-21).
Cardinals Whip L/P 112-101 to Finish at .500
LeRoy-Ostrander’s boys ended the year with a couple wins to get to five-hundred overall. Justin Stevens’ groups first win was over Lanesboro. The Burros led 20-14 at the half. L-O had a 13-1 run in the second half to go from down 27-23 to up 36-28. They won the second half 35-17 for a 49-37 victory. Reid Hungerholt (20 pts, 9 rebs), Camden Hungerholt (19 pts, 9-14 FTS, 7 rebs, 6 asts), and Ryder Stern (4 pts, 11 rebs) led the way. Nick Taylor had 18 (pts) and 9 (rebs) to lead the Burros. Conor Danielson chipped in 9 points. L-O hit 13 of 21 free throws (62%), Lanesboro 5 of 13 (39%). At L/P, things got offensively crazy. The Cardinals overcame a 52-48 halftime deficit by out-scoring the Athletics 64-49 in the second half to post a 112-101 win! Cam Hungerholt scored 61 points (24-32 FGs, 6-10 threes, 7-13 FTs) with 12 rebounds! It is the highest individual scoring out-put in a game in the history of the Journal Sports. Stern had a massive triple double; 10 points, 23 rebounds, and 11 assists! Reid H. added 27 points (8-10 FTs). L-O hit 21 of 35 free throws. Three Athletics scored 20-plus points. Winners of seven of nine, L-O (10-8, 13-13) is 1A’s 11-seed, plays at 6-seed Kingsland (15-10).
Lions Slip Past Superlarks
A free throw by Nate Crouch turned out to be winning margin for Spring Grove in a 63-62 road win at Grand Meadow. It was the regular season finale for the Lions (9-9 SEC, 11-13) who placed third (of five) in the SEC East Division. The Larks (4-14 SEC, 5-20) finished fourth (of five) in the SEC West. For SG grad and current head coach Dakotah Rostad, it was the first return to the school where he once coached. The Superlarks are now coached by his first cousin, Chad Burmester. SG blazed out of the blocks, hitting 9 of 11 shots, including five three-pointers. Four were by Ben Udstuen. He scored 16 of the Lions’ first 21 points. The Grove guys, who defeated GM by 25 earlier in the season, appeared to be on the way with a 32-16 lead only six minutes into the rematch. However, the Superlarks adjusted their defense and reeled off a 12-point run to trail only 38-35 at halftime. GM, which shot 30% while scoring only 35 points in the previous loss to the Lions, shot 40% while scoring 62 points in the rematch. And after a nine-point run early in the second half, GM led 44-40. The Lions scored the next eight and led by as many as six (53-47) before the Larks moved back in front, 59-57. A driving SG basket by Caleb Eiken tied the score, and a three from Devon Williams put SG ahead, 62-59, with two minutes to play. Lions added only 1 of 6 late free throws, but that would be just enough to survive a Superlark three by Keaton Gehling with 7.8 seconds to play. GM rallied partly due to successfully defending Udstuen (team-high 16 points, all in the first six minutes). Williams posted a double-double (12 pts, 11 rebs). Each with eight points, Lyric Stadtler had a career-high 7 assists and Eiken 5 assists. For the Larks, Gehling finished with a game-high 23 points (6-13 threes). Logan Grafe had a double-double (10 pts, 17 rebs). Sawyer Hanenberger (12 pts, 5-5 FGs) and Carter Glynn (7 points, 7 rebs, 9 asts) helped. Both teams shot well from 3-point range, GM 38% (9 of 24) and SG 31% (8 of 26). Each team had 55 official shot attempts. The Lions had two more field goals (SG 44%, GM 40%). The Larks netted two more free throws (9 for 11) than SG (7 for 14). With 22 assists and only 10 turnovers, the Lions had their second-best ball-handling ratio of the season. SG has now won 51 straight in the series. The Lions (9-9, 11-13) are 1A’s 9-seed, play at 8-seed Schaeffer Academy (14-11). Sixteen-seed GM (4-14, 5-20) hosts 17-seed L/P (3-23) in a play-in game.
