Boys Basketball: Caledonia Ties for First With Wins over Chatfield/Cotter
Caledonia boys basketball probably had its best week with two wins over high-quality TRC foes. At West second-place Chatfield (5-2, 9-6), TRC-East second-place Caledonia (5-2, 8-6) trailed 28-23 at the half and 40-32 midway thru the second. But the Warriors closed out the game hitting 13 of their final 19 shots. Colin Stemper had three threes in that span. Meanwhile, Chatfield was 9 of 30 from the field (30%) in the second half and scoreless over there final nine possessions (0-7 FGs). The Warriors got the comeback win 62-54, ending the Gophers’ six-game win streak. Overall, Caledonia shot 26 of 61 (43%), Chatfield 20 of 65 (31%). Coby Hammell (18 pts, 8-10 FGS, 11 rebs) led the charge. Grant King (12 pts, 8 rebs), C-Stemper (11 pts, 3-7 threes, 5 rebs, 4 stls), and Zeke Gengler (9 pts, 6 rebs) helped. Carson Harstad (14 pts, 10 rebs), Ross Stoehr (15 pts), and Brandt McBroom (14 pts) hit double figures for Chatfield. Brooks Lea added 7 (pts) and 8 (rebs). Caledonia then used a huge second half run to take down TRC-East leader Cotter/HL (7-1, 14-3). The Ramblers led 56-45 early in the second half only for the Warriors to rip a 29-2 spurt! The spree led to a big 78-64 win. King (18 pts), Aaron Stemper (17 pts, three threes), Hammell (12 pts), and Anthony Hahn (11 pts) hit double figures. C-Stemper added 8 points. The victory forced a three-way logjam top the TRC-East between the Warriors (7-2, 10-6), Ramblers (7-2, 14-4), and R-P (7-2, 14-3).
Basketball: Trojans’ Week Includes Sweeping L-A
Rushford-Peterson’s basketball teams combined for three wins on the week. The boys hit 11 of 19 threes (58%) and scored a season-high to rip Kingsland 102-37. Six Trojans made double figures; Cayden Lea (19 pts, 4-8 threes), Brode Vickerman (15 pts, 6-8 FGs, 5 rebs), Cole Thompson (14 pts, 5-6 FGs, 3-4 threes), Carson Johnson (12 pts, 5-7 FGs), 8 asts, 5 stls), Ayden Garrett (12 pts, 4-7 FGs, 4-4 FTs, 5 rebs, 4 asts), and Kellen Drinkall (11 pts, 3-5 threes, 4 asts). Isaac Feine added 8 points (4-4 FGs). Max Snitker scored 10 to lead the Knights. R-P then led TRC-West leader Lewiston-Altura (6-2, 10-3) at the half 45-23, watched the Cardinals come back to tie the game, only for the Trojans to push through to a big, league win, 73-66. Johnson (20 pts, 8-14 FGs, 13 rebs, 6 asts) led the effort. Lea (17 pts, 3-9 threes, 5 asts), Vickerman (16 pts, 8-13 FGs, 8 rebs), and Thompson (12 pts, 4-8 threes) helped. Chris Drinkall’s group (7-2, 14-3), Cotter/HL (7-2, 14-4), and Caledonia (7-2, 10-6) now tri-share the TRC-East lead. The girls game saw the Trojans trail 28-24 at the half but build a 49-34 lead in the second half. L-A again came back, taking a momentary lead, 61-60, on a Maycie Mierau bucket (3:13). But R-P then scored the next six points. They led 66-61 with 1:53 left. Mierau hit a three to make it 66-64 (0:48) but Nadia Happel answered with a runner to make it 68-64 (0:23). The game ended anti-climatically, as the next score was the Cards at the buzzer. R-P prevailed 68-66. The Trojans were outshot overall 46% (25 of 55) to 52% (26 of 50), but R-P hit 10 of 22 threes (46%), L-A 6 of 21 (28%). Happel (21 pts, 8-10 FGs, 5-5 threes) led the way. Torryn Schneider (16 pts, 6 asts), Kaia Loney (11 pts, 5 rebs, 4 asts), and Alannah Skalet (9 pts, 3-7 threes) helped. It was R-P’s fifth win a row, as Joe Hatch’s girls (6-3 in the TRC, 11-6 overall) trail Cotter/HL (8-3, 11-9) and Caledonia (11-0, 15-3) atop the TRC-East.
Basketball: Falcons and Burros Split Doubleheader
Boys and girls b-ball teams from Fillmore Central and Lanesboro played a rivalry doubleheader. The guy’s affair saw FC lead 22-14 in the first half and it was tied 26-26 at intermission. Boone Moen and Conor Danielson hit threes over a three-possession span in the second half to give Lanesboro a 45-38 lead. The Burros were 0-for-8 from deep at the time, Moen 0-for-8 shooting. Preston Clarke later had a key offensive rebound put-back (2:12) to put Burros ahead 49-43. Matt Aselson’s group prevailed 51-43. Nick Taylor (23 pts, 10 rebs) led the way. Clarke (8 pts, 8 rebs) and Quadyn Kettner (7 pts, 7-8 FTs, 7 rebs) helped. Bridon Bahl (13 pts, 3-14 threes, 9 rebs, 5 ats) and Adrian Rindels (12 pts, 6-11 FGs, 10 rebs, 3 blks) led FC. Clayton Schoepski added 7 (pts) and 5 (rebs). FC went 6 of 26 (23%) to Lanesboro’s 2 of 13 (15%) from deep, but the Burros were 15 of 23 (65%) to FC’s 3 of 10 (30%) at the line. FC also had 19 turnovers, Burros 13. The Falcons fell to 0-8 in the TRC, 3-14 overall. Lanesboro (7-2, 12-3) leads the SEC-East over SG (8-4, 8-9) and M-C (6-3, 10-5). The girls game saw FC overwhelm the Burros. Hannah Vaalemoen (20 pts, 5 rebs) hit 12 of 14 free throws and Sophia Bronner added a big double-double (17 pts, 20 rebs) in a 62-38 win. Aubrey Daniels added 9 (pts), 5 (asts), and 4 (stls). Jensyn Storhoff (16 pts, 8 rebs) led Lanesboro. Emma Ruen added 7 (pts) and 7 (rebs). FC ended Lanesboro’s five-game win streak, as they beat Houston 50-41 and AC/G-E 54-53 earlier in the week (See “SEC Girls Basketball” and “Non-Conference Girls Basketball” for more). SG/M-C (8-1 in the SEC, 13-3 overall) leads Southland (7-1, 13-2) and the Burros (7-1, 12-6) atop the SEC.

Chatfield scored a season-high, shot 64% (37 of 58) with just 11 turnovers. They overcame a 50-45 halftime deficit and the Eagles winning at the free throw line 20 of 28 (71%) to 11 of 21 (52%).)
