Three Ranked Teams in Play in Caledonia/R-P Series
Caledonia and Rushford-Peterson played their first basketball series of the year. The guys battle pitted #3 Class AA Warriors versus the Class A #9 Trojans. Using their length, Brad King’s group was too much for a young R-P group. The Warriors led 44-32 at intermission and then limited R-P to 5 of 17 shooting in the second half. Three makes came very late in the shot clock. R-P was able to score at the free throw line, going 20 of 34 (59%) for the game to Caledonia’s 13 of 18 (72%), and the Trojans hit 10 of 22 threes (46%), but Caledonia scored much easier in earning a 77-58 victory. Mason King (21 pts, 3-13 threes, 5 asts) and Reid Klug (19 pts, 9-16 FGs, 14 rebs) fueled the Warrior attack. Garrett Konz (15 pts, 6 rebs), Ethan Stendel (9 pts, 8 rebs), and Grant King (7 pts, 6 asts) helped. Cole Thompson 18 pts (6-10 threes) led R-P. Cayden Lea (15 pts) and Carson Johnson (6 pts, 8 rebs, 5 asts) helped. It was Caledonia’s season opener (1-0, 1-0). R-P fell to 0-1 in the TRC, 1-1 overall. The girls game in Caledonia was all Warriors (ranked #7 in AA). Scott Sorenson’s group controlled things throughout for a 61-31 victory. Aubrie Klug (14 pts), Elsa Blum (11 pts, three threes), Josie Foster (11 pts), and Nicole Banse (11 pts) gave team Cal four in double figures while Kensey King (8 pts) just missed. Kaia Loney (10 pts), Torryn Schneider (8 pts), and Emily Helgemoe (8 pts) led R-P. The Warriors improved to 2-0, 3-0. R-P fell to 1-2 in the TRC and overall.
Lions Open with Runaway Wins
Under new head coach Dakotah Rostad, Spring Grove opened with a 78-42 conference road rout at LeRoy-Ostrander and then came home to double-up Fillmore Central 62-31 in a non-conference clash. In both games, the Lions held modest 10 and 12-point leads at halftime, before second-half onslaughts. At L-O, Ben Udstuen hit 11 of 12 shots during a 24-point, career-high 12-rebound night. Bryce Berns had 16 points (7-10 FGs). Caleb Eiken added 6 (pts), 8 (rebs) and 7 (asts). The Lions took the ball inside for 48 points and shot 34% from 3-point land (10 for 29) and 53% overall. The Cardinals shot only 25% from the field but made up some ground, hitting 16 of 25 free throws to SG’s 4 of 6. The Lions led by 10 points at halftime before hitting 19 of 31 shots (61%) after intermission. Camden Hungerholt led L-O with 14 points (7-11 FTs) while younger brother Reid added 11 points (5-8 FTs). Twelve of their combined points came at the free throw line. L-O is 0-1 in the SEC, 1-1 overall. Returning home, the Lions shot 43% while limiting FC to only 24%. SG led by 12 points at halftime, and halfway through the second half, FC was within 14 points, until SG scored 23 of the game’s final 29 points. The Falcons hit only three of their final 20 shots. They were 1 of 18 from deep for the game. SG had 14-point runs in both halves, accounting for most of a 31-point win. Lion junior Devon Williams came off the bench for 15-points and 9 rebounds, both game-highs. Berns added 11 points and Lyric Stadtler eight. Despite sitting out much of the game in foul trouble, Udstuen still went for 8 (pts), 6 (rebs), and 4 (asts). For FC, senior center Greg Kennedy (10 pts, 7 rebs) and senior guard Josh Haugerud (8 pts, 6 reb) did work. The Lions (1-0, 2-0) got revenge for section quarterfinal loss last year.
Gophers Match Last Year’s Win Total in Three Games
Last year was a tough season for Chatfield boys basketball. The Gophers struggled to just a three-win campaign. This season looks like it will be better. He had 25 points in the first half as Chatfield led 55-31 at the break. Stoehr (21 pts, 9-15 FGs, 4 rebs, 5 asts, 5 stls) also had a big game. Kreter chipped in 9 points (4-5 FGs). The Gophers ended the week winning at Albert Lea 80-69, downing a faster, strong, and taller Tiger team. Harstad had 17 points in the first half before getting sick. Stoehr (24 pts, 7-12 FGs, 10-13 FTs, 6 rebs), Kreter (14 pts, 6-10 FGs, 12 rebs), Ryan Rindels (11 pts), and Aiden Johnsrud (3 pts, 1-2 FGs, 7 asts), whose only make was a key three, then picked up the slack.
