Boys Basketball:Warriors Top Trojans and Hermantown, King Records 200th Win
Basketball boys powerhouses Rushford-Peterson and Caledonia went at it and their first of two series on the year. R-P’s guys entered the contest returning pretty much everyone, while the Warriors were nearly a full-scale reboot after graduation took a big toll from last year’s great state qualifier. But Grant King and the Warriors said sucks to varsity experience, as Caledonia and R-P carried on their b-ball rivalry. With ex-Trojan coaching legend Tom Vix in the stands, the teams played a physical war. King had two scoring spurts in the contest. The slick sophomore scored 10 straight Warrior points in the first half and then seven straight later in the second half. Said 7-0 run propelled Caledonia to a 57-48 lead. R-P then could not catch up, though it took a couple key free throws (in a one-and-one situation) from Warrior Griffin Gantenbein, his only two points of the game, to ice the contest. The makes turned a 67-64 lead into a 69-64 edge with 16-seconds left, the dagger. The Warriors notched a huge early season TRC win by 71-64 final. King (24 pts, 5 rebs, 9 asts) led the way for Caledonia. Aaron Stemper (13 pts) and Colin Stemper (9 pts, 4 stls) each hit a trio of threes. Coby Hammell added 12 (pts) and 6 (rebs). Junior point Cayden Lea scored a team-high (21 pts, 5-13 threes, 4 rebs, 4 asts, 4 stls) to lead the Trojans. Guard Will LaFleur (13 pts, 12 rebs, 6 asts) added a double-double. Cole Thompson (13 pts, 3-5 threes) and Landon Dahl (6 pts, 9 rebs) helped. Caledonia hit 11 of 18 free throws (61%), R-P 2 of 5 (40%). Each team hit 10 threes, but Cal did so in 22 attempts (45%), R-P in 32 (31%). The Warriors were 6 of 11 from deep in the second (54%) half and 14 of 25 field goal overall in the stanza (56%) while R-P was 6 of 18 (33%) and 13 of 30 (43%) respectively. It was Coach Brad King’s 200th career win. R-P beat GM earlier in the week (see “Non-Conference Boys Basketball”). They are 0-1 in the TRC, 1-1 overall. The Warriors then trekked to Minnehaha Academy and downed Hermantown 90-63 in a special non-conference game. G-King had 26 points to lead the way. Hammell (18 pts), Zeke Gengler (12 pts), Gantenbein (11 pts) each also reached double figures. The Warriors start the year 1-0 in the TRC, 2-0 overall.
Basketball:Cardinals Play Tight Doubleheader With AC/G-E
A boys and girls doubleheader between LeRoy-Ostrander and Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons had each game go down to the wire. In the girls contest, the Cards trailed 31-19 at halftime but made a big comeback. They started the second stanza with a 14-2 run to tie the game 33-33. With it 45-45, AC/G-E was fouled shooting a three and converted all three freebies to lead 48-45 (2:34). L-O twice got within one after that and took two shots to go ahead in the final minute. In the final 23.2 seconds, down 50-49, the Cardinals could not force a turnover defensively and ACGE got in interior basket to make it 52-49 with eight seconds left. LO only attempted a half-court heave from there, as they fell 52-49. Maria Almaraz-Nolt 17 points, 8-13 FTs, 11 rebounds) led the Cards. Kendall Olson (8 points) and Miranda Nagel (6 pts, 15 rebs) helped. L-O (0-2 in the SEC, 0-4 overall) was looking for its first win. Immediately after, the boys also dug a big hole too, trailing 25-10 in the first half. But they made a successful comeback. Late in regulation, a Reid Hungerholt three-point play gave L-O a 61-58 lead. But with five-seconds left, ACGE’s Darin Linn tied the game 62-62, sending it to overtime. There, L-O’s Mason Janssen hit a big three (1:09) to put the Cards up 70-67. Hungerholt hit two free throws (0:14.3) to make it 72-69. The Knights then banked in a three-pointer just after the buzzer, as L-O narrowly got the win, 72-69! Hungerholt (32 pts, 8-11 FTs, 4-11 threes, 13 rebs, 4 stls) led the way. John Bradley (15 pts, 7-9 FGs, 12 rebs) had a nice game inside. Grayson Stockdale (10 pts) and Janssen (8 pts) helped. It was the Cardinals’ first win (0-1 in the SEC, 1-2 overall).
