Trojans Series with FC and Lanesboro Highlights Shoot-For-Three Games
Rushford-Peterson hosted their Holiday 3-Coops Shoot-For-Three tournament. The Trojans played boys/girls series with Fillmore Central and Lanesboro. R-P’s teams had little trouble with the Falcons. The Trojans boys led 22-15 in the first half when FC starting point guard Clayton Schoepski picked up his third foul. R-P then out-scored the Falcons 31-10 the rest of the half to lead 53-25 at intermission. The #7 in Class A Trojans prevailed 86-39. Twelve Trojans scored with 11 making at least two field goals. Cayden Lea (19 pts, 4-7 threes), Carson Johnson (10 pts, 8 rebs, 5 asts, 5 stls), and Caden Johnson (10 pts, 5-5 FGs) made double figures. Cole Thompson (8 pts), Landon Dahl (6 pts, 7 rebs), Jaxson Meldahl (7 pts), and Creighton Hoiness (6 pts) gave Chris Drinkall’s group great balance. Josh Haugerud (11 pts) and Bridon Bahl (8 pts) led FC. RP shot 50% from the field (33 of 66) and 40% from deep (11 of 27). FC made just 3 of 19 threes (16%). The girls game saw R-P control things despite starting guards Torryn Schneider and Nadia Happel each missing time per three first half fouls. R-P built a 37-15 halftime lead and prevailed 58-34. Frosh Emily Helgemoe (14 pts) led all scorers off R-P’s bench. Nevaeh Happel (9 pts, 7 rebs) and Ava Helgemoe (7 pts, 5 rebs) helped. Schneider, Nadia H., Kaia Loney, and Allanah Skalet all had six points. Brooklyn Simon had 8 (pts) and 4 (rebs) to lead FC, which had 39 turnovers. Both games counted toward the squads’ TRC records. R-P’s girls sweep the season series with FC. In other tourney action, the Falcon girls lost to Baldwin-Woodville 52-34, the boys to Southland 77-38 (See “Non-Conference Basketball” for more).
On day two, R-P’s teams split with Lanesboro. The boys handled the Burros 77-31. Twelve Trojans scored led by sophomore point guard Cayden Lea (21 pts, 5-5 FTs). Will LaFleur (12 pts, 5-8 FGs, 7 stls) also made double figures. Carson Johnson added nine points. Nick Taylor (8 pts, 6 rebs) and Levi Rogers (8 pts) led the Burros. Lanesboro had 39 turnovers versus R-P’s press, the Trojans just 14. R-P (3-1, 7-1) trails Class AA 6th-ranked Caledonia (4-0, 7-1) in the TRC-East. Lanesboro fell to 2-3 in the SEC, 3-5 overall. The girls game was a bit of a shocker. Last year, R-P hammered Lanesboro 60-23. In a rematch denoted by each team pressing, and thus a ton of turnovers, Steve Storhoff’s girls were able to get a few more easy buckets, and thus shoot better. Plus, his daughter Jensyn Storhoff was the best player on the floor, and that resulted in a Burro victory. Lanesboro only trailed early. They led 29-24 at halftime and by as many as 12 (45-33) in the second half. But Joe Hatch’s group then scored 19 of 27 points. A Kaia Loney basket with 2:09 left narrowed the Burro lead to 53-52. Storhoff then scored five straight including hitting her sixth three. With the Burros up 58-52, Emma Root took an “No” three but it became a “Yes” when it found its home, pushing the lead to 61-51 (0:45). Lanesboro made its final five shots. R-P got a three at the buzzer to make the final 63-59 Burros. Storhoff went for 26 (pts), 7 (rebs), and 8 (asts). She was 6 of 10 from deep-deep (like Peterson). Hailey Erickson (17 pts, 7-9 FGs, 12 rebs) best benefitted from Lanesboro’s press break. Taylor Hanson added 6 (pts), (7 rebs), 3 (asts), and 4 (blks). Nadia Happel (17 pts, 4-10 threes, 6 rebs, 4 asts) paced R-P. Allanah Skalet (11 pts, 4 asts), Schneider (9 pts, 5 stls), Loney (8 pts, 7 rebs), and Ava Helgemoe (7 pts, 6 rebs) helped. Lanesboro shot 51% from the field (25 of 49), R-P 29% (19 of 65). The Burros hit 8 of 15 threes (53%), the Trojans’ 10 of 30 (33%). R-P had 20 offensive rebounds to the Burros’ eight, but only won second-chance-points 12 to 6. Lanesboro had 30 turnovers, R-P 23. The Burros (2-1, 5-3) ended R-P’s four-game win streak. The Trojans are 4-2 in the TRC, 5-3 overall. On day one of the tourney, the Burro girls fell to Baldwin-Woodville 56-30 while the Burro boys fell to Hayfield 55-50 (See “Non-Conference Basketball” for more).

Jacob Merchlewitz’s group topped Lyle/Pacelli in SEC action 72-57. The ‘Canes scored a season-high point total including hitting 7 of 15 threes (47%), a season high make-total and percentage. It was Houston’s third straight win. Seniors Rohweder (27 pts, 11-19 FGs, 5-10 threes, 4 rebs, 4 asts, 5 stls) and Geiwitz (23 pts, 10-13 FGs, 9 rebs, 5 asts) again were a lethal combo.
