East Leading ‘Canes, Cards Winners of Busy SEC Week
Teams from the SEC-East played multiple game versus each other, plus versus LeRoy-Ostrander.
Houston at Spring Grove went to overtime. Jake Merchlewitz’s ‘Canes built a 37-23 second half lead before SG roared back. Devon Williams scored seven straight points and Bryce Berns scored six via the drive late, the last putting SG up 43-42 (0:53). With it 44-42, Morgan Rohweder scored on the inside to tie the game (0:10). SG then missed a game-winner. In overtime, Rohweder scored five straight including hitting a three from Yucatan, Houston went 6-for-6 at the line, and SG was 1 of 10 shooting. The ‘Canes out-scored SG 11-2 in the extra session for the 55-46 win. For the game, Houston was 5 of 12 from deep (42%), SG 6 of 32 (19%). Rohweder (29 pts, 12-16 FGs, 3-5 threes, 12 rebs) and Carter Geiwitz (14 pts, 6-7 FGs), who missed the end (injury), led Houston. Ben Udstuen (15 pts, 3-8 threes, 4-4 FTs, 8 rebs) led the Lions. Berns (8 pts, 7 rebs) and Williams (7 pts) helped.
Just down the road, Mabel-Canton won its third straight. Versus Schaeffer Academy, M-C overcame a 37-34 halftime deficit. The Cougars had a 12-1 second half run, going from down 54-51 to up 61-55. SA finished the game making just 2 of 15 field goals and 3 of 8 free throws. Russ Larson’s Coug’s prevailed 67-62. For the game, M-C hit 9 of 26 threes (35%), SA 5 of 23 (22%). M-C shot 25 of 60 (42%), SA 25 of 55 (46%). But the Cougars had just six turnovers to SA’s 15 (nine in the second half). M-C avenged a 66-52 December loss. Isaac Underbakke (23 pts, 8-15 FGs, 3-8 threes, 4-4 FTs, 5 rebs, 5 asts) led the way. Darian Hershberger (12 pts), Tyler Larson (12 pts, 5 rebs), and Kale Tollefsrud (12 pts, 7 rebs) helped. Ethan VanSchepen (28 pts) and Luke Freize (22 pts) led SA.
On Thursday, Lanesboro ended a 23-game losing streak to Spring Grove. In the lowest scoring encounter between the teams in 64 years, the Burros led 39-31 late in the second half. Lion Ben Udstuen drilled a three from the corner to get SG back within three, 41-38 (0:30). But Lanesboro beat the ensuing full-court press with a long inbounds pass to Nick Taylor who two-hand dunked to make it 43-38 (0:28). The final was 44-38. Taylor, led the Burros (16 pts, 8 rebs). Mason Gilbertson (9 pts, 5 asts) and Levi Rogers (8 pts, 8 rebs) helped. Bryce Berns (9 pts, 5 rebs) and Udstuen (8 pts, 6 rebs) led SG. The Lions were 2 of 25 (8%) from deep, Lanesboro 2 of 9 (22%).
Meanwhile, Leroy-Ostrander handled M-C in a defensive affair. L-O had a 9-0 second half run to lead 38-31. A Tyson Stevens basket boosted the lead to 47-41 (1:03). M-C hit a three at the buzzer to make the final 48-44. Cam Hungerholt (23 pts, 11 rebs, 4 stls) led the Cards, helped by brother Reid (17 pts, 5 rebs). D-Hershberger (15 pts, 11 rebs) and I-Underbakke (13 pts, 6 rebs, 5 asts) led M-C. K-Tollefsrud (6 pts, 7 rebs, 4 stls) helped. L-O was 1 of 15 from deep (7%) and 7 of 22 from line (32%) but still won. M-C was 2 of 18 from deep (11%) and 4 of 6 (67%) at the line, but had 25 turnovers to L-O’s 10. M-C had a three-game win streak. L-O snapped a four-game skid.
A night later, the Cardinals won at Lanesboro 54-42. The Burros were down three key players including starter Levi Rogers. Save 2-0, the Cards never trailed. C-Hungerholt (17 pts, 7 asts, 4 stls), R-Hungerholt (14 pts), and Carter Sweeney (10 pts) hit double figures for L-O. T-Stevens added 9 (pts) and 5 (rebs). N-Taylor went for 21 (pts) and 11 (rebs) for the Burros. David Harvey added 10 points. L-O shot 50% (22 of 44), Lanesboro 30% (17 of 56) including 2 of 14 from deep (14%). The Cards are 3-4 in the SEC, 4-7 overall. The Burros fell to 3-5, 6-7.
Meanwhile, Houston out-scored M-C 82-63. C-Geiwitz, the “Canes” 6’5” senior forward, ripped to a 33-point (12-19 FGs, 8-10 FTs), 12-rebound night. M-Rohweder (18 pts, 4-5 FTs, 6 rebs, 5 asts) and Zach Olson (12 pts, 4-6 threes, 5 asts, 4 stls) also hit double figures. Maddox Rodriguez (9 pts, 5 rebs) and Alex Wedl 8 pts (4-4 FGs, 6 rebs) helped. T-Larson was super-efficient in scoring his 22 points (7-11 FGs, 4-5 threes, 4-4 FTs, 5 rebs) to lead the Cougars. I-Underbakke (13 pts, 8 rebs, 4 asts) and D-Hershberger (11 pts) also hit double figures. Kale Eiken added 8 points. Houston had 15 offensive rebounds to help attempt 15 more shots; 31 of 61 (51%) to M-C’s 20 of 46 (43%). Houston (5-1, 7-2) has won six straight and leads Schaeffer (7-3, 7-4) in the SEC-East. M-C fell to 3-5, 4-7.
Warriors Top Saints/Eagles, Fall Versus HVL Power Stewartville
Caledonia’s boys stayed perfect in TRC action, but surrendered a big lead and fell to HVL power Stewartville in non-conference game. Versus, St. Charles (4-0, 9-2), in a battle of TRC division leaders, the East leading #2 in AA Warriors (5-0, 9-1) controlled things, leading 43-35 at halftime. Despite going 12 of 28 (43%) at the line, Cal won its eighth in a row, 80-63. Mason King scored 25 points (three threes) including topping 1,000 for his career. Reid Klug added 20. Ethan Stendel (17 pts) and Garrett Konz (14 pts) helped. Josh Barclay scored 19 to lead the Saints. Brad King’s group then whacked Dover-Eyota 75-28, defense surrendering a season-low. Klug (15 pts), King (13 pts), Konz (12 pts), and Stendel (11 pts) again hit double figures. Aaron Stemper chipped in nine, Grant King eight. The #2 in AA Warriors (7-0, 11-1) then battled #9 in AAA Stewartville (5-1, 9-2). Caledonia started fast with a 26-8 lead. The edge was 45-29 early in the second half, but Stewie scored 25 of the stanza’s first 31 points to go ahead 54-49. Tiger reserve guard Kayden Tix scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half, hitting four threes. After surrendering the lead, Caledonia never fully recovered. With 0:14, they had a tough shot to tie the game down 74-71, but it did not fall. Tix iced the game with two free throws. Stewartville prevailed 76-71, ending a Cal nine-game win streak. King (23 pts, 5-11 threes, 7 asts) led the Warriors. Klug (19 pts, 8 rebs) and Konz (13 pts, 7 rebs, 4 stls) helped. Stendel added 8 points. Parker Wangen (17 pts, 5 asts), Caleb Bancroft (15 pts, 14 rebs), and Logan Quam (14 pts, 4-5 threes) also hit double figures for the Tigers, who shot 63% (17 of 27) after halftime. They shot 46% (26 of 57) for the game, Caledonia 52% (29 of 56). Stewartville won at the line, 13 of 24 to Cal’s 4 of 8. Team Cal (7-0, 11-2) still leads the TRC-East over R-P (5-2, 10-2), which recently fell to St. Charles.
Falcons Notch Three TRC Wins
It was a good week for Fillmore Central boys basketball. At Dover-Eyota, Bridon Bahl scored 22 points (5-13 threes, 5 rebs, 7 asts) and Greg Kennedy (16 pts, 7-12 FGs, 7 rebs, 5 asts, 5 stls) was a force. FC hit 10 threes in posting a 60-43 win. Josh Haugerud (12 pts, 4-4 threes) and Clayton Schoepski (7 pts, 7 asts, 4 stls) also helped the cause. The Falcons then held Chatfield to a season-low in a 70-35 win. They held Gopher leading scorer Carson Harstad to five points, hit 10 threes to Chatfield’s three, had seven turnovers to the Gophers 22. Kennedy (14 pts, 11 rebs, 4 stls), Bahl (14 pts) and Haugerud (15 pts) hit double figures. Atlee Hershberger (8 pts) and Schoepski (7 pts, 5 stls) helped. Masyn Kreter (13 pts) and Ross Stoehr (12 pts, 8 rebs, 4 asts) led the Gophers. Kennedy then scored a season-high (27 pts, 9-17 FGs, 8-12 FTs, 10 rebs) as the Falcons beat W-K 60-52. Schoepski (8 pts, 5 asts), Anthony Kiehne (7 pts, 5 rebs), and Bahl (7 pts, 4 rebs, 4 asts) helped. FC (4-3, 6-8) has won four in a row.
