Beverly Plaehn, at the age of 93, has passed away on May 25, 2024, at Spring Valley Senior Living Center.
Beverly Jean Kain was born on May 5, 1931, in Iowa Kossuth County, Plum Creek Township on her parents’ farm, to Edward and Viola (Dacken) Kain. She was greeted by her 3-year-old sister and eventually welcomed three younger brothers.
Beverly grew up in Plum Creek Township where she attended country schools for eight years. She graduated from Algona Iowa High School in 1948 and attended Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She began her teaching career in 1950.
Beverly continued her educational pursuits by gaining her Bachelor of Science in Education from Drake University in 1970 and then her Masters in Education from Winona State University in 1982.
She was a teacher for 43 years, with her final teaching position expanded 18 years as a Learning Disability Instructor at Stewartville High School, from 1975 to her retirement in 1993.
On December 27, 1955, Beverly married the dashing Navy sailor Leonard Plaehn from Grundy Center, Iowa. They were blessed with three sons and a daughter. The family moved to Spring Valley, Minn., from Iowa in 1972. Beverly and Leonard loved watching their children’s athletic and musical endeavors.
Beverly is survived by her son Tim (Amelie) Plaehn, son Terry Plaehn and partner Dawn, their daughters Danielle and Brittany and their grandchildren Zoey, Carter, Landyn, Damien, Wyatt and Brantley; daughter Kristy (Kurt) Raihn and their daughters Jennaka and Tiana;, and son Doug (Michelle) Plaehn, their sons Mitchell (Sami) and Marcus (Maddie) and their grandson Wyatt.
She is also survived by her brother Jim (Irene) Kain and his three sons Jamie, Brad and Matt; along with her sister-in-law Charlene Kain and nephews Scott Kain, Mark (Marsha) Klaus, Mike Klaus and Jon (Janice) Klaus; and niece Beth (Linda) Klaus.
Beverly is preceded by her parents, her husband Leonard, sister Phyllis Bierle and brothers John M. Kain and Thomas Kain.
Beverly was a member of the First English Lutheran Church of Spring Valley Minn., Lutheran Women’s Mission League, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, Cosmopolitan Club, and La Vallee’ Chapeaux Rouge Red Hatters.
She enjoyed golfing, playing on a bridge club, performing in community theater, outings with friends, music and reading.
In honor of her love of hats we encourage you to wear your best if you so wish to her funeral on June 3 at 11 a.m. at First English Lutheran Church in Spring Valley, Minn., A light luncheon will follow the service in the church basement.
Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. June 2 at Hindt Funeral Home at 316 N. Broadway Ave, Spring Valley Minn.
A private family burial will be held at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston, Minn., where she will be laid to rest next to her dashing sailor.
