Fillmore Central and Kingsland hooked up for a boys/girls doubleheader just after Christmas. The event saw both key Section 1A games go down to the wire. The squads with the better records, lost. The guys game was physical. The visiting Falcons (1-2, 4-2) constantly fought uphill. Kingsland (1-2, 1-5) got off to an 8-2 start. FC briefly led (12-11) but the Knights were back in front by halftime (33-25). Knight junior Jayden Brink hit four first half threes and Mason Kolling was a force inside (9 pts, 6 rebs). In the second half, Kingsland led the duration. FC pushed around the 7-minute mark. A 9-2 run cut a 50-41 Knight lead to 52-50. Will Parker had six of FC’s points in the spurt. But Brink then got a bucket. Kaaleem Reiland followed with a three (57-50). Late, FC had to foul. After making their first ten free throws to start the half, the Knights then went 4 of 10. A Bryce Corson three cut the lead to 63-61 (0:58). It was one of just two threes FC made. Knight Ayden Howard then made one of two at the line. FC got the ball back down 64-61, but got quickly tagged for a back-court violation. Knight Sam Snitker then made one of two to make it 65-61 (0:31.7). FC scored and nearly got a steal trailing 65-63, but Knight Coach John Fenske was granted a timeout. Brink then hit two free throws with 3.4 on the clock to ice the 67-63 win. Brink (23 pts, 4-7 threes, 9-10 FTs, 5 rebs) led the way. K-Reiland (17 pts, 3-5 threes) was key help, as was Kolling (9 pts, 9 rebs). Garrison Hubka added 8 points. FC was led by Jayce Kiehne’s big effort (28 pts, 8-10 FTs, 7 rebs). Parker (14 pts, 18 rebs) had a huge double-double. Corson (10 pts, 4 asts, 4 stls) also made double-figures. The Knights won the game from deep (7 of 15 threes, 47%) and at the line (18 of 29 FTs, 62%). FC was 2 of 24 from deep (8%) and 13 of 19 (68%) at the stripe. The Falcons (1-2, 4-3) had won three in a row. Kingsland improved to 1-2, 2-5.
The gals game was also tight. FC (0-4, 1-5) jumped out 11-2. Kingsland (3-0, 6-2) didn’t get a field goal until the 12:11 mark of the first half. On the back of an Abby Bothun three-pointer just before the buzzer, FC led 28-18 at the half. In the second, threes were critical for the Knights as they made a comeback. Kingsland junior shooter Katelyn Hauser (scoreless in the first half) hit three straight triples and scored 11 straight points to get team double-K within two (34-32) mid-way through the stanza. Kingsland led a couple times, the last 44-43, as the teams went back and forth in the final seven minutes. But Falcon junior Kammry Broadwater got buckets at the 2:10 and 1:18 marks to push FC ahead 47-44. Regan Hanson then sank two free throws to make it 49-44 (0:48). Kingsland got a couple baskets in the final 15 seconds, but FC got the win 50-48. Broadwater (10 pts, 8 rebs, 6 asts, 4 stls) led the way for the Falcons as de facto point guard (Courtney Hershberger did not play). Hanson (12 pts, 12 rebs) had a double-double while hitting two threes (including a key one late). Madison Simon (12 pts, 4 stls) also hit double figures. Bothun (6 pts, 11 rebs) helped. Kingsland was led by Hauser (14 pts, 4-10 threes) and Anika Reiland (11 pts, 18 rebs, 3 asts, 4 stls), who had another double-double. The 5’5” senior guard has four games of 16 or more rebounds. Both teams shot sub-35%. FC (0-4, 2-5) won its second straight. The Knights are 3-0, 6-3.
