Rushford-Peterson and Fillmore Central had their first boys/girls series of the year. The guys game was an overtime gem. The home #18 in A Trojans (6-3, 15-4) came out smoking early. Senior forward Dawson Bunke hit five early threes and scored 16 points in the first eight minutes as Chris Drinkall’s group jumped out to 19-3 and 28-8 leads! But trailing 32-12, FC ended the half out-scoring the Trojans 26-13 to only trail 45-38 at intermission. FC then cooked with three threes to start the second half. They nailed their first six field goals. And R-P looked up at a 54-51 deficit. The game was then tight. R-P built a six-point edge (60-54). FC led by five (75-70). Per a Cayden Lea driving bucket, the home Trojans were up 81-75 late (1:33). But FC finished on an 8-2 run. Greg Kennedy, who vacuumed the offensive glass all game, had two put-back buckets late. The second came after Clayton Schoepski scored but missed his and-one free throw; a four-point possession. It tied the game 81-81 (0:50)! Schoepski preceded the series by taking a charge on defense. Bunke then scored to put R-P back ahead 83-81. In the final 10 seconds, Luke Hellickson hit Jayce Kiehne on a back-door cut and tough reverse finish to again tie the game 83-83 (0:07). FC then got a steal but could not score and the game went to overtime! There, Kennedy banged home a three, then Schoepski hit a three, to give FC an 89-84 lead. R-P was down starting point guard Lea, who fouled out in regulation). He had a monster game (33 pts, 12-21 FGs, 4-8 threes, 6 rebs, 4 asts, 5 stls). The Trojans could not recover. FC hit all six overtime free throws, Kennedy going 4-for-4, and the Falcons notched a key Section 1A win, 95-87. Kennedy (24 pts, 9-13 FGs, 19 rebs, 4 asts, 3 blks) had 17 second-chance-points by himself on eight offensive rebound put-backs! Hellickson (23 pts, 4-11 threes, 6 rebs, 4 asts) and Kiehne (18 pts, 8 rebs, 5 asts) also had big games. Schoepski (14 pts, 4-10 threes) and Josh Haugerud (9 pts 3-7 threes) hit key trifectas. Bunke (28 pts, 7-12 threes) and Lea scored 61 of R-P’s 87 points. Cole Thompson (14 pts, 4-12 threes, 5 rebs) and Caden Johnson (7 pts, 5 rebs, 5 asts, 4 stls) helped. FC hit 13 of 35 threes, R-P 15 of 35 trifectas! Field goal shooting was near identical, FC 32 of 74 (43%), R-P 31 of 74 (42%). FC was plus-seven at the free throw line; 18 of 22 (82%) to 11 of 15 (73%). FC improve to 4-6, 12-8. R-P (6-4, 15-5) had a four-game win streak snapped. The girls game saw the Trojans end the first half on an 8-0 run to lead 29-20. They led by five or more the rest of the way in posting a 54-45 win. Ellie Ekern (21 pts, 13-14 FTs, 5 stls) led the way. Torryn Schneider (15 pts, 6-8 FGs, 3-4 FTs, 4 stls) and Tayler Helgemoe (10 pts, 12 rebs) helped. Kammry Broadwater (18 pts, 9-10 FTs, 6 rebs, 4 asts, 4 stls) was the only Falcon with more than six points. FC shot more free throws (20 of 37 > 54%) but R-P scored more points at the stripe (24 of 33 > 73%). R-P improved to 8-4, 15-6. FC fell to 4-6, 12-9.
