Boys Basketball: Trojans Storm Past Warriors to Sole Possession of First Place
The first time they played, Caledonia did what could possibly be termed an upset in taking down Rushford-Peterson, 71-64. It is hard to call it a true upset. Both are proud and capable basketball programs. But the Trojans returned nearly everyone off a 1A runner-up team. The Warriors returned one starter, graduated three 1,000-point scorers from a state team. The revamped team beating the experienced one was certainly surprising. In the second meeting, with first place in the TRC-East on the line, the Trojans emphatically took control of the division. R-P jumped out 15-5. By the time it was 24-16, seven Trojans had scored. The younger Warriors twice hit multiple threes in succession to make it a single-digit lead. But the R-P lead was as great as 37-21 in the stanza and 46-39 at intermission. Out of the second-half gate, Chris Drinkall’s group scored 15 of the first 18 points for a 61-41 lead. They led 81-55 at one point and cruised by an 85-64 final. Junior guard Cayden Lea scored a game-high 26 points (5-7 threes, 5-5 FTs, 4 asts). He hit four early first half threes to set a tone. Senior forward Landon Dahl neared a double-double (19 pts, 9-12 FGs, 9 rebs). Cole Thompson (12 pts, 4-5 threes), Carson Johnson (11 pts, 5 rebs, 5 asts), Brode Vickerman (8 pts, 4-4 FGs), and Will LaFleur (6 pts, 6 rebs, 4 asts) helped. Sophomore Grant King had a team-high 25 points (7-9 FTs, 5 rebs, 6 asts) for the Warriors. Aaron Stemper (13 pts), Colin Stemper (11 pts), and Anthony Hahn (9 pts) helped. R-P hit 33 of 56 shots (59%) including 11 of 19 from deep (58%). The Warriors, at 23 of 49 from the field (47%) and 8 of 16 from deep (50%), were not slouches with their shooting, but could not keep up. Winners of six straight, the Trojans have just won loss in their last 16 games, 99-91 when D-E’s Matt Matejka scored 50. R-P (9-2, 17-3) Cotter/Hope Lutheran (9-3, 16-7) and Caledonia (8-3, 12-7) top the TRC-East.
Boys Basketball: Burros Run Streak to Seven
The Lanesboro boys basketball’s train kept rolling with a three-win week. They started by avenging an 65-64 loss to Spring Grove. Midway through the second half, with leading scorer Nick Taylor resting on the bench, the Burros had a critical 8-2 run. It turned a 48-43 lead into a 56-45 edge, spurring a 61-52 win. Taylor (20 pts, 18 rebs) led the cause. Returning senior PG Mason Gilbertson (7 pts, 8 rebs) and Preston Clarke (8 pts, 4-6 FGs, 7 rebs) helped. Boone Moen and Conor Danielson each added 7 points. SG was led by Devon Willams (13 pts, 6-10 FGs, 7 rebs), Weston Ingvalson (12 pts, 3-11 threes), Lyric Stadtler (8 pts, 5 asts), and Ricardo Reynolds (7 pts, 6 rebs). The Burros then took down Lyle/Pacelli 73-51, never trailing. Taylor ripped for a career-high 31 points (12-24 FGs, 6-6 FTs, 10 rebs, 6 blks). Danielson (10 pts, 4 stls), Moen (10 pts, 6 rebs), Gilbertson (7 pts, 7 rebs, 8 asts, 4 stls) and Quadyn Kettner (8 pts) helped. L/P had 21 turnovers, Burros 10. Matt Asleson’s group then beat Grand Meadow at home 69-47, again never trailing. Lanesboro finished out the game 30-14. They made 18 of 29 two-point shots (57%), GM 9 of 18 (50%), helping the Burros shoot 49% overall (27 of 55) to the Larks’ 34% (15 of 44). Taylor (29 pts, 11-22 FGs, 5-6 FTs, 11 rebs) authored his 13th double-double and 11th in a row. Moen scored 15 points (5-6 threes). Levi Rogers (7 pts, 7 rebs) and Gilbertson (5 pts, 7 asts) helped. GM was led by Carter Glynn (13 pts), Cohen Craft (11 pts), and Logan Grafe (7 pts, 11 rebs). The Burros (11-2 in the SEC, 17-3 overall) lead the SEC-East over M-C (10-4, 15-6) and SG (8-6, 8-14). They have won seven in a row, 14 of 15. GM is 7-5, 11-8.
Basketball: Cougars Post Three-Win Week, Stay in East Race
While rival Lanesboro is having a big season, Mabel-Canton is quietly right behind. Russ Larson’s Cougars won three road league games on the week to stay in the SEC-East race. The Cougars topped LeRoy-Ostrander 71-42. M-C hit 10 of 29 threes (35%), L-O 3 of 17 (18%). Isaac Underbakke (19 pts, 11 rebs, 4 asts) and Nolan Garness (17 pts, 5-13 threes) led the charge. Kale Eiken added 11 (pts) and 9 (rebs). The Cardinals were led by Reid Hungerholt (12 pts, 7 rebs) and Grayson Stockdale (10 pts). M-C then won at Schaeffer Academy, 66-64. With a 14-2 run, the Lions cut a 53-37 Cougar second half lead, to 55-51. M-C had a three-point possession with 0:31 left to make it 64-58. SA’s Luke Frieze hit two threes in the final 0:20, but the second was with 2.7 seconds left resulting in the final. SA hit 12 of 32 threes (38%), M-C 6 of 16 (38%). The Cougars made 20 of 50 two’s (40%), SA 12 of 24 (50%). Garness (14 pts, 4-7 threes), Underbakke (12 pts, 5 rebs, 6 asts), Eiken (12pts, 6 asts, 4 stls) and Kale Tollefsrud (11 pts) led M-C. Frieze scored 26. M-C then topped L/P 87-79. They had a 41-33 halftime lead cut to 43-42, then a 61-48 edge cut to 66-65. Up 70-69, M-C went 10-2 to lead 80-71 (2:34). Each team scored 46 second half points. Underbakke had a game-high 29 points (15-18 FTs) plus 11 boards. Darian Hershberger (13 pts, 5-7 FGs, 5 rebs), Brevyn Tollefsrud (13 pts), Eiken (11 pts), and K-Tollefsrud (9 pts, 5 asts) helped. M-C was 24 of 32 (75%) at the line, L/P 13 of 17 (77%). Both the Cougars’ FT makes, and percentage, were season bests. M-C has won seven of eight to improve to 10-4 in the SEC, 15-6 overall. They trail Lanesboro (11-2, 17-3) atop the SEC-East.
Girls Basketball: Storhoff and Burros Knock Off #8 Hayfield/SA
After five straight losses to teams with a combined record of 73-30 record (.709 winning percentage), Lanesboro’s girls ended the streak against a section top team. Against Class A #8 Hayfield/Schaeffer Academy (18-4), Jensyn Storhoff hit a deep three just before the shot clock expired with 1:41 left, and Emma Ruen a corner three with 1:09 left. The two big shots stoked Burro leads back to 69-62 and 72-65. They repelled the efforts of Hayfield/SA’s Maggie Hansen, who hit two threes and converted a three-point play in the final 3:30. With the Burros making 19 of 35 second half shots (54%), Steve Storhoff’s girls posted their best win of the year, 74-65. Lanesboro won the second half 50-40 after trailing 25-24 at intermission. Hayfield/SA may have been looking ahead. They fell to 1A’s top team #3 NRHEG a day later 56-53. Lanesboro is 7-3 in the SEC, 13-10 overall.
Basketball: King/L-O Series Sees Cardinals Girls Win in OT, Knight Boys Get First Win
Basketball teams from LeRoy-Ostrander and Kingsland have all have struggled for wins this year. A same night series between said teams fostered an overtime win, and a first win. The girls game saw Maria Almaraz-Nolt hit two free throws with 7.2 seconds left to put L-O up 36-33. Knight senior Macy Runck hit a game-tying three just before the buzzer to send the game to overtime tied, 36-36! There, L-O did not make a field goal, had only one attempt, but prevailed. Almaraz-Nolt hit five of six free throws, and the Knights did not score, in a 42-36 Cardinal win. Almaraz-Nolt (17 pts, 10-14 FTS, 11 rebs) led the way. Miranda Nagel (8 pts, 4-5 FTs, 15 rebs) and Kendall Olson (8 pts, 10 rebs) helped. Runck (18 pts, four threes, 6 rebs) and Hailee Warren (10 pts, 9 rebs), who fouled out, led the Knights. L-O won on the glass 63 to 42, at the line 16 of 25 (64%) to Kingsland’s 7 of 12 (58%). L-O (1-10 in the SEC, 2-19 overall) picked up its first SEC win. The Knights fell to 3-8, 5-17. The boys’ game in Leroy had Dylan Osterhus’ Knights get win number one. Kingsland went ahead at 14-12 and then never trailed. A 15-2 run to start the second half made it 41-22. Dalton Bamlet, a 6’5” junior playing in his first game (transfer), gave the Knights some much needed size (15 pts, 15 rebs). Cardinal junior Reid Hungerholt went for 31 points (13-17 FTs) and 15 rebounds, but Kingsland prevailed 54-44. Collin Stuart was the Knights’ high scorer (17 pts, 6 rebs).
