Boys Basketball: #3 Warriors Win Three Non-Con Affairs, Up Streak to Eight
Caledonia boys basketball posted a trio of non-conference wins on the week to continue their excellent season. At La Crosse Central, Brad King’s group annulled a 25-24 halftime deficit by out-scoring the Riverhawks 37-17 in the second half for a 61-42 win. Reid Klug (24 pts) and Garrett Konz (22 pts, three threes) each topped 20 to score 46 of Caledonia’s 61 points. The Warriors then beat West Salem a second time this year, 78-66 at home. Caledonia won a game over the holidays 77-67. Grant King (19 pts), Mason King (17 pts), Konz (15 pts) and Ethan Stendel (10 pts) all hit double figures. Klug added 9 points. The Warriors led 44-28 at halftime, hit 21 of 26 free throws. Team Cal finished the week off downing Maple River 88-57. It was the Mason King show, as the senior scored a season-high 38 points, hitting 7 of 13 threes (4 asts). Konz (17 pts, 4 stls), Klug (15 pts, 8 rebs, 5 stls) and G-King (9 pts, 7 rebs, 8 asts) also helped the cause. Winners of eight in a row, the #3 in AA Warriors (10-0, 19-2) lead R-P (8-3, 14-3), La Crescent/Hokah (6-4, 9-9), and FC (6-5, 10-12) in the TRC-East.
Girls Basketball: Grove Girls Extend Winning Streak to 11
The Spring Grove girls (9-1 SEC, 16-3) extended their winning streak to 11 games and maintained their lead in the SEC race over GM (8-2, 17-2) with a pair of league road wins, 58-26 at Kingsland and 60-34 at Houston, completing season sweeps of both conference rivals and ending the Hurricanes’ five-game winning streak. Although those encounters ended with similar-sounding 32- and 26-point decisions, they began with different scripts. Spring Grove led 16-0 while holding the Knights scoreless for the first seven minutes, but the Lions trailed the Hurricanes for the first nine minutes (the first half of the first half). Houston then experienced a scoring drought while Spring Grove raced away with a 24-to-6 run on the way to halftime. In each game, the Lion full-court defensive pressure was directly responsible for 10 turnovers. Rebounding was competitive, Grove with 34 boards both nights, the Knights’ 30 and the ‘Canes’ 28. The free throw line was of little consequence, but the 3-point line was determinate. The Lions shot relatively well from distance – 33% (9 of 27) versus Kingsland, 31% (5 for 16) at Houston. The Knights hit only two of 21 treys (10%), the Hurricanes only one of 15 (7%). Two Lions scored in double figures versus the Knights, four against the ‘Canes. Kylie Hammel scored a game-high 18 points versus Kingsland and shared the high with 13 at Houston. Kinley Soiney scored 14 and 12. Also at Houston, Izabel Kauffman netted 12 points and Siri Konkel 13, the latter with 7 assists and 8 assists over the two games. The lone double-double belonged to Houston junior center Jorja Meyer with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Aubry Boldt added 8 (pts) and 5 (rebs). Junior forward Jaelee Hagstrom led Kingsland with 10 points (5-7 FGs), 7 rebounds. Hailee Warren collected another seven boards. Kingsland closed the week at 3-9 in the SEC, 4-13 overall, Houston at 8-5, 14-6.
Girls Basketball: Burros Ride Storhoff to 3-0 Week
Lanesboro’s girls continued their best span of basketball of the year, winning three games to run their win streak to five. Junior guard Jensyn Storhoff averaged 26 points per over the span. Steve Storhoff’s group first built a 37-20 lead at halftime versus Lyle/Pacelli before prevailing 67-55. The game featured 50 free throws; Lanesboro 12 of 26 (46%), L/P 18 of 24 (75%). Storhoff scored 20 points (9-13 FGs, 6 rebs, 5 asts, 5 stls), as did Hailey Erickson (20 pts, 9-17 FGs, 6 rebs). Emma Ruen (10 pts, 5 rebs), Taylor Hanson (8 pts, 4 blks), and Cora Mayer (6 pts, 11 rebs) helped the cause. Storhoff then tossed in 28 points (12-17 FGs, 6 rebs, 7 asts) in a 77-51 over Class AA Lewiston-Altura. The Burros shot 49% (32 of 65) to the Cards’ 36% (21 of 59). L-A also had 22 turnovers, Lanesboro 16. Hanson (12 pts, 6-9 FGs, 5 rebs). Emma Root (10 pts, 6 rebs), Mayer (8 pts, 5 rebs), and Erickson (6 pts, 8 rebs) also did work. Finally, Lanesboro topped Southland 61-55 in a second-tier SEC contest. The Burros led 32-26 at halftime, and by as many as 17 multiple times in the second half. Southland had a 13-1 run to close to down 55-50 (3:27). Storhoff then hit two free throws and a scooping layup to push the lead back to 59-50 (2:38). The junior finished with 30 points (12-24 FGs, 3-9 threes). Mayer (7 pts, 5 rebs) and Hanson (6 pts, 9 rebs) helped. Lanesboro shot 43% overall (23 of 54) to Southland’s 33% (21 of 63). The Burros (7-4, 12-8) have won five in a row. They sit behind SG (9-1, 16-3), GM (8-2, 17-2), Houston (8-4, 14-6), and Southland (8-4, 13-7) in the SEC.
Boys Basketball: GM Plays 1A Games Versus FC, Kingsland, M-C
Three 1A boys basketball games involving Journal-covered teams revolved around the Grand Meadow. Versus Fillmore Central (6-4, 9-10), the Falcons’ triad of scorers Bridon Bahl (21 pts, 5-10 threes, 8 rebs), Josh Haugerud (16 pts, 4-10 threes, 8 rebs, 4 asts), and Greg Kennedy (14 pts, 12 rebs) were too much for a young GM (2-9, 2-12). FC led 28-11 at halftime, hit 10 threes to GM’s five, and posted a 62-37 win. Carter Glynn (16 pts, 9 rebs) and Logan Grafe (5 pts, 15 rebs, 4 asts) did work for the Larks. Chad Burmester’s group (2-9, 2-13) then played at Kingsland (8-4, 11-6). The Larks hung around before finally pulling maybe the SEC’s biggest upset this season. GM never led until midway through the second half. From that 44-43 edge, it was tight. Carter Glynn authored an and-one play to put the Larks ahead for good at 60-58 (2:43). It was GM’s last made field goal. But they hit enough free throws down the stretch, 7 of 13, and Kingsland only made two of its final eight field goals. In the final minute, trailing 64-62, the Knights had two offensive opportunities. But Lark Skyler Wangen took a charge and a spinning Kaaleem Reiland lay-up then did not spin in. Down 65-62, Kingsland also had a shot at the tie in the final 10-seconds, but they missed a three. Glynn was fouled and hit the second of two bonus free throws (0:02.7) to ice a 66-62 win. Glynn (28 pts, 11-13 FGs, 3-3 threes, 8 rebs) led the Larks. But Cohen Craft (12 pts), Sawyer Hanenberger (10 pts, 4 asts, 6 stls), Grafe (7 pts, 14 rebs), and Keaton Gehling (7 pts) made it a team effort. Hanenberger had all six of his steals in the second half to help initiate a GM comeback. Kingsland was led by Max Erdman (18 pts, 8 rebs). Gavin Hubka (14 pts, 6 rebs), Parker Johnson (11 pts, 5 rebs), Zach Reiland (8 pts, 6 rebs, 4 asts), and K-Reiland (8 pts) helped. GM shot 47% (25 of 53) to the Knights’ 37% (22 of 60). Each team made five threes, and Kingsland won at the line 13 of 18 (72%) to GM 11 of 21 (52%). It was the Larks’ first win not against Lyle/Pacelli (2-0 versus Athletics, 0-13 versus everyone else). It was GM’s second highest scoring mark of the season and only the fourth time they surpassed 60 points (3-1). The Larks than travelled to Mabel-Canton. GM led a good chunk of the first half, but the Cougars were on top at halftime 32-29 and Russ Larson’s group built a 49-39 second-half lead. Larks Cohen Craft and Keaton Gehling then hit back-to-back threes and Craft followed with a runner in the lane for an 8-0 run, cutting the Cougar lead to 49-47 (3:44). But M-C’s Darian Hershberger answered back with a three, and the Cougars then got back-to-back baskets off the press, moving the lead to 56-47. M-C prevailed 57-49. Hershberger (22 pts, 5 rebs) and Isaac Underbakke (13 pts, 7 rebs, 5 asts, 8 stls) led the Cougars. Tyler Larson (8 pts) and Kale Eiken (7 pts, 5 rebs) helped. Craft (22 pts, 6 rebs) led GM. Gehling (12 pts, 4-11 threes) and Glynn (10 pts, 10 rebs, 6 asts, 5 stls) helped. GM fell to 3-10, 3-14.
Girls Basketball: Larks Roll to Nine in a Row
Grand Meadow’s defense held three opponents on the week all to less than 35 points and sub-25% shooting. The Larks won three more to up their streak to nine. Versus Randolph, GM overcame a 19-17 halftime deficit, survived shooting 5 of 29 (17%) from deep and scoring a season-low in a tight 41-32 victory. Randolph had just 13 second half points, shot 26% (13 of 50) overall. Lauren Queensland (24 pts, 15 rebs) carried the load offensively for GM. Aspen Kolling chipped in 6 (pts) and 9 (rebs). The Larks then beat Kingsland 56-33 in SEC play, holding the Knights to 22% shooting (12 of 55). GM hit nine threes, led by Gracie Foster (16 pts, 4-8 threes) and Kolling (13 pts, 3-9 threes, 9 rebs). Queensland (13 pts, 7 rebs, 5 asts) and Naomi Warmka (8 pts, 14 rebs) helped. Macy Runck (12 pts, 4-10 threes) led the Knights. Chantle Reiland added 6 (pts) and 8 (rebs). Kingsland fell to 3-9 in the SEC, 4-13 overall. GM then topped Wabasha-Kellogg 66-26. It was the ninth game GM held a foe under 40 points (9-0). Queensland (25 pts, 10-14 FGs, 3-5 threes, 4 asts, 8 stls) and Foster (17 pts, 5-6 threes, 7 rebs, 5 asts) did the biggest work. Warmka (8 pts, 11 rebs) and Kolling (8 pts, 5 rebs) helped. GM shot 56% (25 of 45) including 9 of 14 (64%) from deep. W-K was held to 22% (11 of 51). GM (8-2, 17-2) trails SG (9-1, 16-3) in the SEC.
