Basketball: Around the Horn Hoops

It was a week of basketball games between area teams. LeRoy-Ostrander and Lanesboro had a boys/girls series, as did Fillmore Central and Chatfield, Spring Grove (SG/M-C) and Grand Meadow, Houston and L-O. The Falcons also hosted Kingsland in boys b-ball, as did L-O with GM, Mabel-Canton with Houston, Houston with Lanesboro, and SG with M-C. Lanesboro’s girls hosted Rushford-Peterson. 

Burros Sweep Series with Cardinals; Boys Run Streak to Five

Lanesboro’s teams swept their series with LeRoy-Ostrander. The Burro boys also won two other games. The girls game with the Cardinals saw the Burros start 21-4. L-O came back to take the lead in the second half at 44-43, but for just 15 seconds. The Burros outscored them 17-6 to the close to post a 60-50 win. L-O had 29 turnovers, Lanesboro 17. Senior guard Jensyn Storhoff (26 pts, 13 rebs, 5 stls) led Steve Storhoff’s group. Emma Ruen (14 pts, 8 rebs) and Hailey Erickson (9 pts, 6 rebs) helped. L-O was led by Maria Almaraz-Nolt (19 pts, 11 rebs, 3 asts, 2 stls, 2 blks). Mabel Johnson (8 pts) and Keira Lewison (7 pts, 5 asts) helped. Lanesboro improved to 7-3. L-O fell to 0-10. In LeRoy, the Burro boys dominated. They led 53-13 at the half and prevailed 83-33. Nick Taylor (24 pts, 8 rebs, 3 asts, 5 stls), a 6’7” junior, scored all his points in the first half. He had multiple dunks. Conor Danielson (17 pts, 5-6 threes, 6-7 FGs) and Boone Moen (12 pts, 3-5 threes) helped. The Burros hit 12 of 26 threes (46%). Reid Hungerholt (15 pts) and John Bradley (8 pts, 10 rebs) led L-O, which dropped to 3-4. The Burros then beat Houston 66-18. The ‘Canes had 31 turnovers, Lanesboro 7. Taylor (17 pts, 7 rebs, 5 stls, 3 blks) was again a force. Danielson (16 pts, 5-6 FTs, 4 stls), Moen (11 pts, 3-6 threes, 6 rebs, 4 asts), and Quadyn Kettner (9 pts, 6 stls) helped. Matt Asleson’s group finished by topping Schaeffer Academy 70-53. Lanesboro led 41-27 at the half and by double digits the rest of the way. Taylor (18 pts, 10 rebs, 4 stls), Mason Gilbertson (18 pts, 4-8 threes, 4 asts) and Moen (16 pts, 4-7 threes, 6-9 FGs) reached double figures. Luke Frieze had 29 points to lead SA. The teams combined for 18 made threes with Lanesboro going 12 of 28 (43%), SA 6 of 17 (35%). The division leading Burros (4-1, 8-2) won their fifth in a row. They lead M-C (4-2, 7-3) in the SEC-East. 

FC and Chatfield’s Teams Split; Gopher Boys Win Three TRC Games

Basketball teams from Fillmore Central and Chatfield split a series. The girls game was choppy and physical with 65 total foul shots. FC led by as many as 16 in the first half (31-15) and 32-22 at the half. Behind Amaya Harmening’s scoring 13 of 17 team points (16 in the half total), the Gophers made a second half run. Chatfield went ahead 42-38. But fouls favored FC. They then scored 10 straight points, eight at the line, to lead 48-42. Chatfield got as close as 57-54, but the Falcons made 15 of 23 freebies in the second half, 23 of 39 for the game (59%), and posted a 65-58 win. Chatfield was 16 of 26 (62%) at the line. Rebounds (55 to 30), offensive rebounds (28 to 8), and second-chance-points (24 to 6) favored FC. Aubrey Daniels (18 pts, 8-10 FTs, 6 rebs, 5 stls), Kyla Hellickson (14 pts, 14 rebs), Sophia Bronner (13 pts, 7 rebs), and Hannah Vaalemoen (11 pts, 8 rebs) led FC, which improved to 7-3. Harmening (20 pts, 8-14 FGs, 8 rebs), Grace Schroeder (14 pts, 4 stls), and Sophia Goldsmith (10 pts) paced Chatfield. The Gophers are 2-5 in the TRC, 4-9 overall. Chatfield’s boys went 3-0 against TRC foes. Jeremy McBroom’s group ended the spree, beating FC 85-51. Carson Harstad and Ross Stoehr each hit four first half threes, the team made 12 of 25 deep shots (48%) total. Harstad finished with 31 points (7 of 14 threes, 9 rebs), Stoehr with 22 (7-10 FGs, 4-4 threes, 4-4 FTs, 5 rebs). Kash McBroom added a double-double (13 pts, 5-8 FGs, 10 asts). FC was led by Bridon Bahl (16 pts, 4-8 threes, 8 rebs), Logan Illg (11 pts), and Clayton Schoepski (10 pts, 5 rebs, 7 asts). Rylan Ristau added 8 points. FC fell to 0-4 in the TRC, 3-8 overall. Preceding that, Chatfield won at home versus PEM 74-59 and La Crescent/Hokah 81-72. Versus the Bulldogs, the junior Harstad amassed 29 points (9-18 FGs, 5-10 threes, 6-7 FTs, 8 rebs). Stoehr (17 pts, 8-14 FGs, 9 rebs) and Brandt McBroom (14 pts, 3-5 threes, 7 asts) helped. The Gophers were 27 of 57 from the field (47%), 10 of 21 from deep (48%), and 10 of 12 from the line (83%). Caden Castle (26 pts) and Jack Scheiber (21 points) paced PEM, which fell to 3-5. Versus the Lancers, the Gophers won the second half 44-33 to annul a 39-37 halftime deficit. Chatfield shot 30 of 55 (55%) overall, albeit 1 of 7 from deep (14%). They hit 20 of 26 free throws (77%). An efficient Stoehr put up 28 points (10-12 FG, 7-8 FTs, 6 rebs) to lead the way. B-McBroom added a double-double (11 pts, 5-6 FGs, 5 rebs, 11 asts). Harstad (15 pts, 6 rebs) and Brooks Lea (13 pts, 6-8 FGs, 8 rebs) also hit double-figures. K-McBroom added 7 (pts) and 5 (rebs). Five Lancers made double figures led by Talan Einerwold (18 points, four threes). L/CH fell to 1-9 on the year. The Gophers (4-2, 7-6 overall) trail L-A (5-1, 9-2) in the TRC-West. They have won four in a row. 

Larks and Lions Split; GM Boys End 52-game Series Losing Streak

The series between Spring Grove and Grand Meadow resulted in a split. The Superlark boys downed a short-handed Lion team by 70-48 fin al. It was GM’s first win in boys basketball over SG since 1999. They ended a 52-game series losing streak! GM won the glass 50 to 35 including 22 to 12 offensively for 18 second-chance-points. The Larks led 30-24 at the half, but won the second half 40-24. Carter Glynn (17 pts, 17 rebs, 5 asts, 3 stls) and Logan Grafe (17 pts, 7-11 FGs, 17 rebs) had big double-doubles. Blake Hubbard (14 pts, 4 asts, 4 stls) and Keaton Gehling (10 pts, 6 rebs) helped. Ricardo Reynolds (18 pts, 8-16 FGs, 9 rebs) and Devon Willams (13 pts, 6-12 FGs, 6 rebs) did work for the Lions who were down key players Emery Bartell and Kolton Nerstad. GM improved to 6-3. SG fell to 3-7. The girls game saw GM lead SG/M-C 18-17 in the first half before the Lions ended the stanza on a 17-5 run for a 34-23 halftime edge. Taylor Elton’s group prevailed 63-41. Siri Konkel (14 pts, four threes, 7 asts), Kinley Soiney (13 pts, three threes, 5 rebs, 4 stls), Izabel Kaufmann (10 pts, three threes), Brinley Middendorf (9 pts, 8 rebs) and Kylie Hammel (7 pts, 9 rebs, 5 asts) led SG/M-C. They matched a season high with 12 threes made. Gracie Foster (18 pts, 13 rebs) and Naomi Warmka (9 pts, 10 rebs) did work for GM, which fell to 0-12. The Lions (6-1, 10-3) are tied top the SEC with Southland (6-1, 10-2) just ahead of Lanesboro (5-1, 7-5). 

Cardinals and Hurricanes Split Doubleheader 

A doubleheader in Houston with LeRoy-Ostrander was a split. The girls game saw the ‘Canes win by a 65-37 final. Houston led 25-19 late in the first half before finishing on a 12-2 run for a 37-21 halftime edge. Senior guard Aubry Boldt continued her huge year (23 pts, 10-18 FGs, 7 rebs). Jorja Meyer added a double-double (14 pts, 10 rebs). Rylee Boldt chipped in 5 (pts), 10 (rebs), 5 (asts), and 4 (stls). Maria Almaraz-Nolt (9 pts, 7 rebs), Miranda Nagel (7 pts, 8 rebs), Mabel Johnson (8 pts, 4 asts, 5 stls), and Ally Siskow (5 pts, 8 rebs) paced L-O. Emma Geiwitz’s ‘Canes (4-2, 7-8 overall) won their third in a row. L-O (0-7, 0-11) remained winless. The Cardinal boys got redemption, though. Junior Reid Hungerholt pumped in 33 points (14-17 FTs, 5 asts) in a 67-52 victory. Talan Lewison (7 pts, 6 rebs, 4 asts, 3 stls, 4 blks), Grayson Stockdale (11 pts, 3-7 threes) and John Bradley (9 pts, 5 rebs) helped. Houston was led by Tilden Witt (13 pts), Hayden Ronneberg (9 pts), Atreyu Florin (9 pts), Axel Vix (9 pts), and Bennu Norton (8 pts). The Cardinals improved to 2-3 in the SEC, 4-5 overall. The ‘Canes fell to 1-7, 1-12. 

FC Boys Handle Kingsland

In a Monday non-conference game, Fillmore Central handled Kingsland by 79-52 final. The Falcons had 27 assists on 33 made field goals. Junior guard Bridon Bahl (22 pts, 4-8 threes, 11 rebs, 8 asts, 6 stls, 3 blks) had a massive game. Adrian Rindels (13 pts, 6-7 FGs, 6 rebs), Clayton Schoepski (11 pts, 6 rebs, 6 asts), Logan Illg (17 pts, 7-10 FGs, 5 rebs), and Rylan Ristau (10 pts, 6 rebs, 7 asts) made it a team effort. Freshman Lennon Falck (20 pts, 8-11 FGs, 4-6 threes) and Collin Stuart (17 pts, 10 rebs) led the Knights. FC improved to 3-6. Kingsland fell to 0-10. 

M-C Boys Top Houson; Underbakke Tops 1,000 Career Points

Mabel-Canton’s boys topped Houston by 68-33 final. Cougar senior guard Isaac Underbakke scored a game-high 24 points (11-19 FGs, 8 rebs, 5 asts, 4 stls) including topping 1,000 for his career. Kale Eiken added 19 pts (7-12 FGs) for M-C. Axel Vix (11 pts) and Bennu Norton (8 pts) were Houston’s top scorers. M-C led 51-22 at halftime. They shot 49% (29 of 59) from the field and forced 23 turnovers. For the season, Underbakke leads his team with 18.1 points, 8.7 boards, 5.5 assists, and 3.4 steals per game. M-C improved to 6-2. Houston fell to 1-10.

GM Boys Top L-O

In a SEC-West boys’ game, Grand Meadow’s boys took care of LeRoy-Ostrander. GM hit 14 threes on 52 attempts (27%) but they also outrebounded L-O 51 to 34 including 22 to 5 offensively in a 76-47 win. Keaton Gehling (26 pts (6-19 threes) and Carter Glynn (19 pts, 21 rebs, 6 asts) had huge games. Cohen Craft (13 pts, 5 rebs) and Logan Grafe (7 pts, 13 rebs, 4 asts) helped. Reid Hungerholt (22 pts, 3-6 threes), Grayson Stockdale (12 pts, 4-12 threes), and John Bradley (12 pts, 5-9 FGs, 8 rebs) did work for L-O. GM improved to 7-3. L-O fell to 3-5. 

SG Boys Shoot Past M-C

In a SEC-East boys’ game, Spring Grove topped Mabel-Canton. At full strength for the first time in almost a month, Dakotah Rostad’s Lions jumped out 10-0 and never trailed. They shot season-highs from the field (50% > 29 of 58) and from deep (55% > 10 of 19). M-C was 6 of 26 (23%) from deep. The Lions ended a five-game skid via a 72-59 win. Weston Ingvalson (20 pts, 8-13 FGs), Lyric Stadtler (18 pts, 4-8 threes, 6 rebs, 4 asts), Devon Williams (13 pts, 9 rebs), Emery Bartell (12 pts, 3-4 threes, 6 rebs, 4 asts), and Ricardo Reynolds (7 pts, 9 rebs) gave the Lions great balance. Isaac Underbakke (17 pts, 11 rebs, 8 asts, 5 stls) led M-C. Kale Eiken (10 pts) and Brevyn Tollefsrud (9 pts) helped. M-C (4-2, 7-3) and SG (4-3, 4-8) trail Lanesboro (4-1, 8-2) in the SEC-East. 

R-P Girls Outscore Lanesboro

In Saturday girls basketball action, R-P beat Lanesboro on the road 88-73. The Trojans did not have a turnover until the 6:36 mark of the first half. They led by as many as 17. The lead mostly hovered around 10. The Burros got as close as 50-44 early in the second half. Trojan senior Nadia Happel led the way with 26 points (8-9 FTs). Kaia Loney (19 pts, 7-10 FGs, 5-6 FTs, 6 rebs), Emily Helgemoe (11 pts), and Alannah Skalet (10 pts) also made double figures. Torryn Schneider went for 7 (pts), 8 (rebs), and 7 (asts), Ava Helgemoe 6 (pts) and 10 (rebs). Addison Drinkall scored 9 points of the bench (3-5 threes). Guards Jensyn Storhoff (20 pts, 8 rebs, 6 asts) and Emma Ruen (19 pts, 6 asts) paced the Burros. Hailey Erickson added 15 pts (6-10 FGs), 13 coming in the second half. Jentrey Schreiber chipped in 8. R-P shot 54% (32 of 59), Lanesboro 48% (28 of 59). The Trojans also won free throws 15 of 21 (71%) to 10 of 16 (63%). RP is 3-3 in the TRC, 7-6 overall. Lanesboro is 5-1 in the SEC, 7-5 overall.

Southeast Conference Boys Basketball (1/8 & 1/9) 

Spring Grove 66, Lyle/Pacelli 69 (SG: L. Stadtler 26 pts (5-14 threes), 6 rebs, 6 asts, 6 stls; Kolton Nerstad 13 pts, 5 rebs, 4 stls; Ricardo Reynolds 8 pts, 5 rebs; Weston Ingvalson 8 pts. With two starters out injured, the Lions rallied from an 11-point deficit before 10 lead changes and five tie scores in the second half. L/P overcame 26 turnovers by shooting 55% from the field and scored the last five points to win by three.)

Southland 87, Kingsland 33 (K: Kaaleem Reiland 10 pts; Max Snitker 10 pts; Tate Rasmussen 8 pts) 

Grand Meadow 33, Southland 86 (GM: C. Glynn 12 pts; L. Grafe 12 pts, 7 rebs. GM was 1 of 17 from deep (6%), Southland 9 of 28 (32%). The Rebels led 37-18 at the half, won the second half 49-15) 

Kingsland 57, Lyle/Pacelli 80 (K: M. Snitker 17 pts (6-9 FTs); Collin Stuart 17 pts (4-5 FTs), 5 stls; K. Reiland 8 pts; T. Rasmusen 7 pts, 6 rebs. Knights are 0-9 in the SEC, 0-12 overall) 

Non-Conference Boys Basketball (1/5 & 1/8)

Mabel-Canton 79, Wabasha-Kellogg 85 in 2 OT (MC: I. Underbakke 30 pts (7-9 FTs), 12 rebs; Kale Tollefsrud 14 pts; N. Garness 13 pts, 7 rebs; Cael Wangsness 6 pts, 9 rebs. The Cougars led most of the second half. The game went to overtime tied at 68 and double OT tied a 74. W-K won the second extra session 11-5. W-K was 10 of 28 (36%) from deep, M-C 5 of 26 (19%). M-C won at the free throw line 22 of 36 (61%) to 11 of 22 (50%). They had a five-game win streak snapped)

Chatfield 49, La Crescent/Hokah 38 (C: Sedona Thompson 11 pts, 6 rebs; Julia Goldsmith 11 pts, 12 rebs; Amaya Harmening 10 pts, 10 rebs, 3 stls; Grace Schroeder 4 pts, 4 asts, 8 stls. The Gophers overcame a 22-14 halftime deficit and trailing most of the second half, outscoring the Lancers 35-16 after intermission. They ended on a 20-3 run to annul a 35-29 deficit. Chatfield hit 14 of 33 free throws (42%), but LCH was 5 of 12 (42%). The Gophers won their third in a row) 

Lewiston-Altura 65, Fillmore Central 58 (FC: S. Bronner 25 pts, 11 rebs; Kyla Hellickson 11 pts; Aubrey Daniels 7 pts, 5 asts. FC fell behind 37-23 at halftime. The Falcons shot 21 of 61 (34%) while L-A was 26 of 51 (51%)) 

PEM 54, Caledonia 81 (C: A. Klug 39 pts (nine threes); Jessica Stendel 19 pts. Klug was one game removed from scorning 38 points and hitting seven threes versus West Salem)

Grand Meadow 46, Lewiston-Altura 81 (GM: N. Warmka 18 pts, 12 rebs, 6 stls; G. Foster 13 pts (5-6 FTs); Paisley Kolling 9 pts. The Cardinals shot 50% for the game (32 of 64)) 

LeRoy-Ostrander 29, La Crescent/Hokah 63 (L-O: Miranda Nagel 12 pts, 11 rebs; Maria Almaraz-Nolt 8 pts. L-O trailed just 28-22 at halftime but scored just seven second half points) 

Houston 69, Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons 48 (H: A. Kingsley 22 pts (three threes); Aubry Boldt 15 pts; Jorja Meyer 13 pts; Rylee Boldt 9 pts) 

St. Charles 48, Kingsland 56 (K: H. Warren 23 pts (4-6 FTs); Lydia Redman 11 pts (5-5 FTs). Warren scored 14 in the second half. The Saints scored 24 second half points, 12 at the free throw line, 12 from the field) 

Lanesboro 69, Lewiston-Altura 71 (L: J. Storhoff 22 pts, 10 asts; Emma Ruen 15 pts, 6 rebs, 4 stls; Hailey Erickson 14 pts (7-8 FGs), 5 rebs; Jentrey Schreiber 9 pts, 6 rebs; Cora Mayer 9 pts, 8 rebs. The Burros trailed 43-29 in the second half only to then lead late, 65-64. Maycie Mierau hit a three with 1:04 left to put L-A up 70-67. Down 71-69 in the final minute, the Burros had two possessions, missing three shots including a two just before the buzzer. The Cardinals improved to 9-4.)
