Baseball (5/23 – 5/28)

Chatfield’s Carter Daniels just gets home in time ahead of the tag of Cotter’s Asher Rouleau in the teams’ 1AA East quarterfinal contest. The Gophers prevailed 10-1, but then fell 8-5 to PEM in a 1AA East semifinal (despite Daniels hitting a home run). They moved on to a “loser out” game versus Caledonia.

Lewiston-Altura 1, Fillmore Central/Lanesboro 5 [5] (FCL: C. Ferrie 1-2, RBI, R; D. O’Connor 1-3, 2B, RBI; Peyton Olson 1-2, RBI; T. Sexton 4 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, Win); FC/L 6, L-A 10 [5] (FCL: C. Ferrie 2-3, 2 RBI, R; D. O’Connor 1-3, 2B, 2 R; J. Peterson 1-3, 2 RBI; Garrett Gossman 1-2, R. Caledonia 1, La Crosse-Aquinas 2 (C: Brady Augedahl 2-3, 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K, No Decision; Jordan Tornstrom 1-1, 3B; Tristan Augedahl 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, No Decision; Ayden Goetzinger 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, No Decision; Drew Yahnke 1 2/3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, Loss. Warriors scored one in the third on an RBI-groundout. Aquinas tied it in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on a passed ball. In the seventh, with two outs, a single and back-to-back hit-batsmen loaded the bases. Aquinas’ Calvin Hargrove won the game with a walk-off single)

Playoffs

Caledonia’s Thane Meiners digs for third for a first inning triple in the Warriors 1AA-East semifinal game versus La Crescent/Hokah. Team Cal won its opening 1AA game versus Lewiston-Altura 4-0, but fell to the Lancers (above) by a 10-2 final. They moved on to a “loser out’ game against Chatfield.

(1A Round of 16) 10-seed Wabasha-Kellogg (6-13) 2, 7-seed Spring Grove (11-7) 0 (SG: Caleb Griffin 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 10 K, Loss. WK: Cole Scheel 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 10 K, Win. Jaxon Strinmoen’s infield single was the only base hit for SG. Only four Lions reached base against W-K freshman left hander Cole Scheel. The game featured no RBIs and just six total hits. W-K’s two runs were unearned. SG had four 1-2-3 innings. Their best threat was the 6th, runners on second and third with one out, but a strikeout and a ground-out ended the frame)

(1A Round of 16) 11-seed Mabel-Canton (5-13) 1, 6-seed United South Central (8-6) 9 (M-C: Cayden Tollefsrud 2-3, two 2B, RBI. USC: Johnny Martinez 2-3, 2B, 4 RBI, R; Nick Bushlack 2-3, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R; Blake Schroeder 5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, Win; Zale Bushlack 2-3, 2 RBI. Martinez was USC’s nine-hole hitter. Cougars finish at 4-10, 5-14 overall)

Fillmore Central/Lanesboro’s Gunner Benson making a diving grab in the Falcons opening round 7-2 playoff win over AC/G-E. Jordan Peterson is also pictured. Cooper Ferrie got the win giving up just one hit in 5 2/3 innings. The Falcons joined Caledonia, Chatfield, and Rushford-Peterson as the Journal 11 baseball teams to win a playoff game. All four are TRC squads.

Carrier 3-4, 2 RBI, 1 2/3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K, No Decision; Connor Jax 2-4, 2 R; Drew Schindler 2-4, RBI. PEM: Jason Feils 3-5, 2B, RBI, 2 R; Baden Fenton 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R; Carson Reeve 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, Win; Johnny Evers 3-4, 2 RBI; Peyton Schumacher 2-4, 2B, RBI, 2 R; Jameson Brinkman 1-3, 3B, RBI, R. Daniels hit a solo home run in the fourth to make it 5-2 Chatfield. PEM scored the last seven runs, aided by five extra base hits and multiple Gopher errors. With it 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth, Chatfield loaded the bases with nobody out but didn’t score. The eight runs are the most Chatfield has given up this year, tying a 17-8 win over PEM. The Gophers moved into one-loss bracket)

T-Augedahl had beat LCH late in season 4-1, but Lancers got revenge knocking him out after three innings. LCH had a five-run fourth to lead 8-1. The Warriors move into 1AA-East one-loss bracket)
