Maroon Friday; Chatfield Nips West Central/Ashby for 1AA State Title!

December 6, 2021 by Paul Trende

It is a very happy ending. All the drama that preceded it can just fade away amidst the ultimately successful season.  Chatfield (Section 1AA champion, 12-1) took on West Central Area/Ashby (Section 6 AA champion, 11-1) for the Class AA state football title. And just like the drama that preceded - star running back Sam Backer’s ejection from the state semifinal and thus … [Read more...]

Delaney to Carrier Carries Gophers to 1AA Title Game

November 29, 2021 by Paul Trende

It was a game that veered off script, if any football game has a script. The contest had a wild finish. It had two situations where one team was primed to score the clinching touchdown (but didn’t).  The winning team lost its star player, but banded together and proved its metal. That team was the Chatfield Gophers. It wasn’t an easy task to make the 1AA state title game, but … [Read more...]

LeRoy-Ostrander turned a 6-6 halftime stalemate into a decisive 30-6 runaway win in the 9-man Section One football final at Dodge Center. With the No. 3 section seed, the Cardinals (9-2) were in the section title game for the first time in 17 seasons against the defending section champ.  With the No. 1 section seed, the state-ranked No. 2 Burros (10-1) did sustain an impressive … [Read more...]

Grand Meadow Stuns #6 Mabel-Canton in “Showcase” Game

November 1, 2021 by Paul Trende

At the start of the year, there were a couple teams surely gunning for SEC powerhouse Mabel-Canton. Lanesboro and Spring Grove both hoped to knock off the Cougars, ending their decade-plus league-play winning streak. With four combined tries, neither pulled the feat. Then there is Grand Meadow. M-C swept the Superlarks to open the season 25-17, 25-23, 25-17. The teams have won … [Read more...]

Tuesday the 21st of September, five Journal-covered cross country programs ran only against another Journal-covered programs amidst two meets in Rushford and Harmony.  On Thursday, September 30, all five squads descended upon the St. Charles Invite.  The top 10 (particularly boys) was littered with Journal-covered athletes.  Five of the top six runners were either from LARP, … [Read more...]

Falcon VB Comes From Behind to Beat Trojans

October 11, 2021 by Paul Trende

In a key TRC game, Rushford-Peterson volleyball (4-1, 12-5) hosted Fillmore Central (6-0, 10-7).  Per homecomings, the game was played a 1 p.m. in front of most of the Trojans student body and a bunch of FC’s.  It turned into a tense five-set affair.  The story of games one and two was R-P’s serving and/or FC’s serve receive.  The Trojans had six game one aces, as the Falcons … [Read more...]

Cardinals Shellack #1 Mountain Lake 36-6

October 4, 2021 by Paul Trende

Nine-man rankings in the state may be a little bit off the first few weeks but should align much better after games like the week four battle in LeRoy.  LeRoy-Ostrander (2-1) struck Mountain Lake Area (3-0) from the ranks of the unbeaten, from its top spot in the state in 9-Man.  And Trevor Carrier’s group did so emphatically.  The Cards built a 21-0 halftime lead and cruised … [Read more...]

September 27, 2021 by Paul Trende

In maybe the year’s marquee Section 1 9-Man contest, Lanesboro football (2-0) took down dangerous district adversary, LeRoy-Ostrander (2-0), and their joystick play-making quarterback Chase Johnson.  The Burros ground-and-pounded their way to victory amidst a back-and-forth offensive game.   Team black and orange scored first, going 58 yards on their first drive.  A 46-yard … [Read more...]
