The State of Area Sports

November 23, 2020 by Paul Trende

Fillmore County Journal - Paul Trende Sports Director

The fall sports season is starting to wind down, albeit uncharacteristically.  As of November 17, football and volleyball teams are in a state of flux due to COVID.  Fillmore Central is on distance learning until December, annulling the Falcons from the football play-offs, ending their season.  FC volleyball is down also, though a small possibility remains they play again … [Read more...]

Burro Football Takes Down #5 Southland

November 16, 2020 by Paul Trende

It has been awhile since Lanesboro football posted a truly marquee victory.  Their last great win probably dates to 2013, when the (Niko Anderson) Burros (over the course of two days, oddly) beat eventual state champion Grand Meadow.  Lanesboro finished 8-2, losing to GM in the 9-Man semifinals.  That was the Burros last season of note.  Until, that is, this year.  Entering … [Read more...]

Lark Football Downs Houston, Stays Perfect at 5-0

November 16, 2020 by Paul Trende

Through the first four weeks of the season, GM football overcame obstacle after obstacle.  They beat the defending state champions.  They beat a couple rivals.  They beat a fellow state ranked team.  Gary Sloan’s group hurdled Mountain Lake, Spring Grove, LeRoy-Ostrander, and Southland to stay unbeaten.  Their week five opponent also was of significance.  GM trekked to Houston … [Read more...]

November 16, 2020 by Paul Trende

Mabel-Canton football has never been shy about running the football under Coach Karl Urbaniak.  Versus Kingsland, the Cougars made the Knights beet red with all the running.  Senior Gavin Johnson ran for 250 yards on 39 carries with 4 TDs.  Freshman Cayden Tollefsrud ran for 249 yards on 18 carries and 2 TDs.  The duo accounted for all six Cougars TDs and all five two-point … [Read more...]

Points Off Turnovers Propels Gophers

November 16, 2020 by Paul Trende

Fillmore County Journal - High School Football

Usually, the phrase points-off-turnovers is used in basketball.  Chatfield (3-1) football took out Triton (3-1) as a result of turnovers directly leading to points.  Triton turned the ball over three straight possessions in the second quarter, at one point running just two offensive plays but racking up three miscues (interception on first play of a possession, fumble on a … [Read more...]

Fillmore County Journal - High School Football

In a Thursday night football game, Rushford-Peterson quarterback Malachi Bunke had his way with the Cotter Ramblers.   The junior threw 13 total passes and nearly half went for TDs.  Bunke went 13 of 23 for 314 yards, 6 TDs, and zero interceptions, as the Trojans cruised past Cotter 58-12.  The Trojans’ QB used senior wide receiver Kobe Lind (6-116, 3 TDs receiving) and junior … [Read more...]

Falcon Volleyball Gets Revenge, Improves to 7-1

November 16, 2020 by Paul Trende

Fillmore County Journal - High School Volleyball

On October 19, Chatfield volleyball opened some eyes by beating FC 3-1 in an early season TRC match.   It was set to be the first of two games between the two squads.  The re-match was scheduled for November 16 in Preston.  But the TRC has multiple schools on distance learning.  There are teams that aren’t playing.  In a quick bit of scheduling between Athletic Directors Dan … [Read more...]
