Caledonia football is back in the top ten, ranked #3 in AA. Carl Fruechte’s Warriors defended that high ranking by shutting down Dover-Eyota in a Southeast-White affair. Through three quarters, the Eagles had just one first down. It came by way of a 15-yard Warrior roughing the snapper penalty. D-E mounted nothing against the Caledonia defense, led by #55 Grant Ness, who authored four TFL’s including a sack. The Warrior “D’ (and special teams) would’ve been fantasy worthy. Kyle Bechtel recovered a fumble in the Eagles end of the field, which led to a 3-yard Ethan Stendel TD run for the game’s first score (7-0). Later in the quarter, speedy return man Fischer Wait broke off a 38-yard yard punt return TD to give Caledonia a 14-0 lead. Ayden Goetzinger had a late first half interception. The Warriors led 14-0 at intermission. Another turnover set up Caledonia’s second offensive score. In the third quarter, a punt deflected of a D-E player, and Warrior Tyler Jennings pounced on it at the Eagle 29. Four plays later, Lewis Doyle hit Stendel for a 6-yard pitch-and-catch TD. Bechtel added his third PAT and Caledonia led 21-0. Said score would hold as the final, as D-E’s first non-penalty first down came midway through the fourth. Offensively, Caledonia was a work in progress, getting inside the D-E 30-yardline four times, only to come away with no points. Penalties were the big bugaboo. Caledonia was flagged 11 times for 90 yards. Doyle (6 of 7, 76 yards, TD passing) was efficient when asked to throw. Eric Mauss (21-80 rushing) churned out short-runs in the ground game, with assistance from Goetzinger (8-42 rushing). Stendel (3-yard TD run, 6-yard TD catch) had the Warriors two offensive scores. Bechtel (4-60 receiving) and Caleb Conniff (3-43 receiving) did some damage in the air. D-E was held to 41 yards passing and 35 yards rushing with four total first downs. Caledonia (2-0, 3-0) stays perfect. They and #1 Chatfield (2-0, 3-0) are undefeated in the White. D-E is 1-2.
