Balancing out the lobbyists

November 27, 2017 by Lee Hamilton

Fillmore County Journal - Lee Hamilton

One of the quirks of life in Washington, D.C., is that pretty much the only people who don’t refer to lobbyists by that name are, well, lobbyists. They’re “policy advisors,” or “strategic counsel,” or “public relations advisors,” or lawyers, or even just “consultants.” Whatever they’re called, though, they play a huge role in making policy. For the most part, they are able, … [Read more...]

Correction

November 27, 2017 by Fillmore County Journal

In the November 13, 2017, issue of the Fillmore County Journal, it was misstated in the Canton City Council report titled “Canton meets a new face of Fillmore County,“ that there would be a benefit held on November 18 for Brian Kelly.  It should have read that this benefit will be held for Brian Kerns. We apologize for the error. … [Read more...]

Devil’s Advocate…Participation

November 27, 2017 by Aaron Bishop

Fillmore County Journal - Southeast Minnestoa where Fillmore County News comes first - Aaron Bishop

I wasn’t the fastest runner in high school cross-country. On a really good day, I would place in the upper echelons of the pack, but generally, I was one of those kids who got a participation ribbon. I accepted the ribbon and quickly moved on to whatever drinks or goodies were standing at attention on the nearby table. Nowadays, I haven’t any idea where these ribbons are; … [Read more...]

Journal Writing Project Military ban on transgenders

November 27, 2017 by Fillmore County Journal

By Laura Vettleson-Trutza On June 30, 2016, under the Obama administration, transgenders were no longer banned and could serve openly in the military. I found this to be a good thing that the military would be more open to those wanting to fight for our country. However, on July 26, 2017, a little over a year later, President Trump announced via twitter that the military … [Read more...]

A View From The Woods

November 27, 2017 by Fillmore County Journal

Fillmore County Journal - A View From The Woods - Loni Kemp

What is it about music? The cold, windy and gray November days keep me inside, since all the garden chores are done. Hunters are out and about in the woods, so I don’t feel like hiking either. Every year about this time, I return to my piano. Refreshing my sight-reading skills, I regain that feeling for making music out of the instrument under my fingers. For no particular … [Read more...]
