The second girls individual section tourney took place. Six area gals qualified for state at the Sections 1 & 3 event in Redwood Falls. FCLMC’s Vivienne Hoeltzle and Katie Whelan, LARP’s Lauren Honken, head the cast. Hoeltlzle, a junior ranked #9, authored four pins to earn the 118-pound crown. She topped GMLOS frosh Brandy Christenson in the finals. Christenson had three first period pins to make the finals. Both Hoeltzle (21-6) and Christenson (20-10) qualified for state. Whelan (190-pounds) needed just two pins to re-qualify for state. The senior (13-5), ranked #4, beat Mayo’s Olivia Martinez (11-2) in the finals. Whelan went as Section 1 & 2 runner-up last year. Like Hoeltzle, Honken racked up four pins, taking 106-pounds. She topped Z-M’s Macy Schaefer (26-9) in the finals. The senior (16-4) is now a two-sport individual state qualifier (Pole Vault). GMLOS’ Diann Smith (136) and Chatfield’s Chloe Berg (124) earned return trips to state via runner-up finishes. Smith won two falls to make the finals, then fell by 9-3 decision to Byron’s #9 Hattie Mathre (28-8). The Bulldog senior (28-4) pinned Hastings’ Grace Gerlach (13-6) in a true second.
