Wrestling: All Five Area Squads Mix It Up
The week in wrestling saw the five ‘Journal-covered’ squads mix it up. Caledonia/Houston hosted Chatfield and W-K for a triangular. LARP hosted GMLOS and W-K. Dover-Eyota hosted the Gophers and FCLMC.
The Cal/Hou tri in Houston had three very lopsided matches. Top-ranked Chatfield dominated, beating the Falcons 75-0 and the Warriors 62-0. The Gophers took seven forfeits versus W-K, Jameson Priebe (107), Logan Pearson (114), Javier Berg (121), Kaisen Johnson (127), Carson Rowland (152), Ben Carrier (172), and Will Boelter (215). Alden Pearson (145) and Sean Kirschner (189) won by fall, Hunter Polikowsky (139) by injury default. Layne Root (133 > 17-1), Ayden Miner (160 > 20-5) and Cole Ramaker (18-0) added tech falls. Versus the Warriors, Chatfield got tech falls from Berg (121 > 16-1), Johnson (127 > 15-0), Root (133 > 17-1), and Miner (160 > 15-0). Priebe (107) and Ramaker (215) had the duals’only pins. A-Pearson (145), Rowland (152), and Kirschner (172) won by forfeit. There were four decision matches, all Gopher wins. L-Pearson (114) topped Aiden Burns 7-1. Polikowsky (139) topped Braxton Lange 4-1. Carrier (189) topped Cooper Allen 7-5; Allen tried for a go-ahead take-down in the final 0:30. Boelter (285) topped Aden Kulas 3-0. Caledonia/Houston also topped W-K 50-6. The Warriors took four forfeits, Nolan Conway (107), Burns (114), Walker Kohlmeyer (121), and Anthony VonArx (215). Aaren Kulas (127) had Cal/Hou’s sole pin. B-Lange (139 > 17-1), Will Allen (160 > 17-2), C-Allen (189 > 16-1), and Ad. Kulas (215 > 17-2) each won tech falls. There were three double forfeits. Cal/Hou is 3-1 in the TRC, 5-9 overall.
In Lewiston, LARP hosted GMLOS and Wabasha-Kellogg. The hosts posted a 53-22 win over GMLOS and beat W-K 64-12. Versus the Bulldogs, Carter LaFee (107), Owen Lange (127), Michael Alexander (133), Quintin Betthauser (145), Carter Cady (152), and Nolan Happel (160) had pins. Christian Zibrowski (121) and Zach Plank (189) won by forfeit. Chase Drazkowski added a 21-1 tech fall. GMLOS got pins from Ayden Stier (172) and Rowan Sween (285). Lincoln Lunning (114) won by forfeit, Cael Smith a 10-0 major decision. GMLOS beat W-K 54-18. Parker Armagost (127), Smith (139), and R-Sween (285) won by fall. Logan Gregerson (107), Calum Sween (152), Drake Payne (189), and Connor Popenhagen (189) won by forfeit. Felix Christenson (145) won a 17-2 tech fall, Teague Alden (133) a 13-5 major decision, and Zac Gehling (160) a 14-10 decision. LARP match-by-match stats versus W-K were not known. After the Westfield Duals (See ‘Wrestling), LARP is 5-1 in the TRC, 15-4 overall.
Chatfield at the Dover-Eyota triangular with FCLMC also was a Gopher sweep. Chatfield took out the Wolves 65-9, aided by forfeits at 107 (Priebe), 114 (L-Pearson), 127 (Johnson), 133 (Root), and 139 (Polikowsky). Berg (121), A-Pearson (145), Rowland (152), Boelter (215), and Ramaker (285) had first period pins. Ayden Miner (160) won a 17-1 tech fall. FCLMC got a pin from Cole Sass (189) while #2 Kane Larson beat #3 Ben Carrier (172) by 7-5 decision. Carrier topped Larson 11-8 in the FCLMC tourney finals earlier this year. Chatfield also dominated Dover-Eyota 57-10. Priebe (107), L-Pearson (114), Johnson (127), Polikowsky (139), A-Pearson (145), Rowland (152), Carrier (172), and Boelter (215) had pins. Miner (160) won an 18-3 tech fall, his 18th of the season. He has scored a team-best 406 points. Two of Chatfield’s losses were by decision, Caden Haag (133) over Root 14-9, Piercen Allen (285) over Ramaker 13-7. The Gophers are 6-0 in the TRC, 12-2 overall. FCLMC hung with the Eagles in the triangular’s first match-up. Wins by Larson (fall) and Sass (17-1 tech fall) at 172 and 189 cut the D-E lead to 36-29. The Eagles got pins at 215 and 285 for the 48-29 win. Ben Norby (107), Beckett Hovland (114), and William Boettcher (152) also had pins for the Wolves (1-4, 3-12). Forfeits at 133 and 139 hurt the FCLMC cause.
Wrestling (1/14 – 1/18)
Decorah 37, Caledonia/Houston 31 (The teams split the first six weights with Decorah ahead 18-15. The Vikings then built a 37-21 lead after 189. Aiden Burns (114) and Max Schmitz (172) had pins for the Warriors, Walker Kohlmeyer (121) and Anthony VonArx (285) won by forfeit, Aden Kulas (215) by 8-0 major, and Braxton Lange (139) by 8-7 decision)
Triton Triangular > FCLMC 64, Wabasha-Kellogg 18 (The Wolves took forfeits at 107 (Ben Norby), 133 (Charles Guma), 152 (William Boettcher), 189 (Cole Sass), 215 (James Cullen), and 285 (Beau Lacey). Nolan Eide (139), and Kane Larson (172) won by fall, August Pfeffer (121) and Quinci Kaase (160) by 18-3 and 21-3 tech falls); FCLMC 30, Triton 40 (A tight dual throughout saw FCLMC take its second lead at 30-28 following a Cole Sass pin at 189. But the Wolves forfeited 215 and fell by fall at 285. Pfeffer (121) and Larson (172) also had pins. Eide (139) won by forfeit. Hovland (114) and Kaase (160 won 12-5 and 4-1 decisions. FCLMC also forfeited 145)
South St. Paul Girls Quadrangular > Apple Valley 46, Chatfield 30 (Chatfield started with pins by Emily Bova (100), Melody Ward (106), and Maizee Priebe (112) to lead 18-0, but pins by Kendyl Nolte (142) and Elle Eickhoff (148) were their only other wins. The latter put Chatfield up 30-22, but Apple Valley took the final four by forfeit. The Gophers won five of eight wrestled matches, but forfeited five total); South St. Paul 42, Chatfield 24 (Bova (100), Kinley Manahan (124), and Nolte (148) had pins. Eickhoff (142) won by forfeit. Chatfield dropped three by forfeit); Chatfield 47, Eagan 30 (Bova (100), Ward (106), Priebe (112), Amelia Sladek (136), Nolte (142), and Eickhoff (148) won by fall, Bryn Goetzinger (112) by forfeit, Brynn Horsman (130) by 19-2 tech fall. Pine Island Girls Tourney (Hastings (209.5) topped Pine Island (186) for the team title. GMLOS (85) took 15th, FCLMC (34) 30th, and LARP (26) 35th of 41 teams. The tourney had A, B, C, and D divisions. In the A-division, GMLOS’ Zoe Steinkamp (won 15-2 major, won fall, lost 20-0 tech fall, won two falls) and Kloe Meyer (235 > won fall, lost fall, won two falls) each took third. LARP’s Bobbie Wnuk (170 > lost fall, won two falls) took third. FCLMC’s Vivienne Hoeltzle (124 > won two falls, lost fall, won fall, lost fall to Steinkamp) and Charlotte Ferrie (130 > won fall, lost fall, won fall, lost fall) each took fourth)
Westfield Dave Erickson Duals > LARP 26, Owatonna 41 (Owen Lange (127), Michael Alexander (139) and Zach Plank (189) had pins for LARP. Happel (152) had LARP’s only win, by fall. The S-Eagles forfeited three weights and were not at full strength)
Lake Mills Duals > GMLOS 57, Central Elkader 21 (GMLOS took forfeit wins at 106 (Logan Gregerson), 126 (Parker Armagost), 150 (Jaydence Ward), 175 (Ayden Stier), 190 (Drake Payne), and 215 (Wyatt Krull). Teague Alden (132), Cael Smith (138), and Rowan Sween (285) added pins, Zac Gehling (165) a 7-0 decision win); GMLOS 36, Lake Mills 48 (In a dual with all pins or forfeits, and with wrestling starting at 215-pounds, GMLOS came back from down 24-6 to tie things at 24-24, only to drop four straight and trail 48-24. Armagost (126), Alden (132), Smith (138), Stier (175), and Payne (190) won by fall. Gregerson (106) won by forfeit); GMLOS 51, North Butler/Clarksville 30 (Armagost (126), Calum Sween (150), Payne (190), Krull (215), and R-Sween (285) won by fall, Lincoln Lunning (113), Gehling (157), and Stier (175) by forfeit. Cael Smith (138) won a 9-3 decision); GMLOS 54, South Winn 30 (Armagost (126), Alden (132), Payne (190), and R-Sween (285) won by fall, Gregerson (106), Smith (138), Felix Christenson (144), Ward (150), and C-Sween (157) by forfeit); GMLOS 18, Southeast Polk 63 (C-Sween (150), Steir (175), and Payne (190) won by fall.
