Win over Southland makes three straight for Lion girls

January 12, 2023 by Lee Epps Leave a Comment

The Spring Grove girls extended their winning streak to three games with a third straight win in the series against Southland, 47-36, on Jan. 6 at Spring Grove. With a young playing rotation that includes an eighth grader, three freshmen, two sophomores and two seniors, the Lions evened their record at 5-5 (3-3 SEC) while the Rebels returned home at 3-6 (2-2 SEC).

Each team shot with very similar success – SG 34% and the Rebels 33%. But for the second straight game, the Lions prevailed by shooting more often – this time due to nine more offensive rebounds and nine fewer turnovers.

Grove shot a better percentage from 3-point range, a season-best 36% (4 for 11), than they did from the free throw line, 1 for 4, 25%. But the Rebels matched that 36% with one more trey (5 for14)

Freshman Kylie Hammel led Lion scoring with 16 points while Addyson McHugh tossed in 8 points along with 5 rebounds and spearheaded the defense with 7 steals. Freshman point guard Siri Konkel directed the attack with 5 assists plus 6 points. Eighth grader Brinley Middendorf seized 7 rebounds.

Southland senior Bria Nelsen shared game scoring honors with 16 points along with 6 rebounds while freshman Juliette Matheis had 8 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

There were three scoring surges. The Lions took the lead with an early 9-point run and led 24-16 at halftime. A 10-point run early in the second half created a 34-19 cushion. A late 10-point scoring streak by Southland would not be enough. With this third straight win against the Rebels, Spring Grove edges ahead in the series, 10 wins to nine.

The Lion B-team (4-5), which had won at Lyle/Pacelli in overtime, 41-33, fell to Southland, 28-11, as did the seventh graders (1-7) by almost the same score, 28-10.
