It was announced at the July 10 Whalan City Council meeting that the Whalan Good Old Days celebration will take place this summer.
Present at the regularly scheduled council meeting were Mayor David Hallum along with council members Owen Lewis, Thore E. Johnson, Sheila Higbe and Kim Berekvam. City Clerk/Treasurer Michele Peterson was also in attendance.
Two items were added to the agenda under Miscellaneous which included Whalan Good Old Days and Update on the Sentence to Serve (STS) Crew.
Minutes of the regularly scheduled June 12 council meeting and the Treasurer’s Report were approved as presented.
Visitor comments
Jane Lewis thanked everyone who helped out with the Music in the Bluffs concert held in Whalan on Saturday, July 8.
New business
Discussion on repairs to the gas tank was tabled until the August council meeting. Randy Berekvam, City Maintenance, will get a quote to have the gas tank fixed and will present it at the August council meeting.
The walkabout map by the gazebo is in bad shape and needs to be removed. Randy Berekvam will remove the sign.
Continued Business
A quote for $3,000 was received from Generation X to place asphalt on both sides of the road coming down the church hill to prevent further erosion. Approved having Generation X complete the project.
Discussion on DNR signs and trees along the trail was tabled until the August 2023 regularly scheduled city council meeting.
The purchase of two new picnic tables was approved.
Miscellaneous
Councilmember Berekvam announced that Whalan Good Old Days will be held this year. The event will take place on Saturday, August 5. Anyone who lives in Whalan, or has ever lived in Whalan, is invited to a potluck to be held at noon at the Whalan Town Hall.
Mayor Hallum reported on the work of the STS crew. The crew has completed a few projects including clearing brush and painting curbs among others. The council appreciates the work that was done and hopes to have the STS crew back to work on future projects in town such as improvements to the city maintenance building.
The next regularly scheduled Whalan City Council meeting will be held on Monday, August 14 at 5 p.m. at the Whalan Town Hall. The public is encouraged to attend.
