Fillmore County Journal- Whalan looks at solution to city clerk position

After months of working on the new City of Whalan Code of Ordinances to tailor them to the cities needs, the council passed a resolution adopting the new Code of Ordinances at the October 12 regularly scheduled Whalan City Council meeting.

Present at the meeting were Mayor Marlys Tuftin, council members Thore E. Johnson, Owen Lewis, Kim Berekvam and Sheila Higbe, along with City Clerk/Treasurer Michele Peterson.

The agenda was approved with one addition under Miscellaneous.

The minutes from the September 13, council meeting were read aloud by Tuftin and approved.

The treasurer’s report was approved after it was read aloud by Peterson as council members reviewed their personal copies.

There were no visitor comments, either in person or through Zoom.

Continued business

The Resolution Accepting Donation 2021-12 was approved.  Wes Harding transferred Taste of the Trail funds in the amount of $3,308.92 to the City of Whalan as he has left the committee and relocated.  Jane Lewis will be taking over as Taste of the Trail representative for Whalan and will coordinate with the city about the funds, and Peterson will check with the city auditor on proper handling of the funds.

The council approved Resolution 2021-11 Adopting Code of Ordinances.

Peterson reported to the council that purchasing picnic tables is an acceptable use of the Lanesboro Chamber of Commerce funds. Lewis and Johnson will look into the purchase of a picnic table using the $300 of the funds from LACC and up to an additional $200 of city funds if necessary.

Tree trimming has been completed.

New business

Tuftin reported to the council that Andrej Peterka had offered to fill the empty seat on the Zoning Committee.  The council approved to appoint Peterka.

Miscellaneous

The council approved to have Dave Norby with Norby Tree Service down and remove a tree that has been deemed dangerous, and also to obtain an estimate for clearing and removal of brush and tall grass under the power lines on the hill.

The next regularly scheduled Whalan City Council meeting will be held on November 8, at 5 p.m. at the Whalan City Hall.  For further information visit the City of Whalan website at www.cityofwhalan.weebly.com or call the Whalan City Office at (507) 467-2212.
