Warrior Baseball Wins Seventh Straight

May 10, 2021 by Paul Trende

Fillmore County Journal - Paul Trende Sports Director

Fresh off Caledonia boys state basketball runner-up finish, many of the same guys have helped the Warriors to a great start to the baseball season.  Team Cal ran off three more wins the Week of May 26.  On Tuesday, St. Charles came to town.  Brad Augedahl’s group won 16-3 in five innings.  It was their fourth straight 10-plus-run win (by a combined 58-6 score).  The Warriors scored nine runs in the bottom of the first.  Cal one thru three hitters Thane Meiners (1-1, 2B, 4 RBI, 3 R, 3 BB, 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, Win), Austin Klug (3-4, 2B, 4 RBI, 2 R), and Jake Staggemeyer (2-4, two 2Bs, 3 RBI, R) combined to drive in 11 runs.  Andrew Kunelius (2-3, 2 R), Devin Vonderohe (2-2, 2 R), and Brady Augedahl (1-2, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R, 3 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K) also did work.  Two nights later, things were tougher in Chatfield.  Caledonia went up 2-0 in the first and never trailed, but the Gophers tied it in the third (2-2) and sixth (7-7).  Trailing 7-4, Gopher Drew O’Connor doubled and scored after a Connor Jax hit.  With the bases loaded, Henry Gathje had an RBI single making it 7-6.  Caden Nolte’s RBI ground-out tied it 7-7.  But in Caledonia’s top of seven, Vonderohe led off with a double.  Chatfield got the next two out, but Gabe Morey singled, Vonderohe scoring on an error making it 8-7.  Meiners than singled and Klug was walked to load bases.  Staggemeyer’s 2-run single made it 10-7, which held as the final.  Klug (2-2, 2B, 4 RBI, R, 2 BB) continued to pound the ball.  Morey (2-2, 3 RBI), Meiners (3-4, 3 R, 5 1/3 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, No Decision), Vonderohe (2-4, 2B, 2 R, 1 2/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, Win), Ayden Goetzinger (1-3, 2 R), and Staggemeyer (1-5, 2 RBI) helped.   Chatfield was led by Max Aug (3-3, 2 RBI, 2 R), Seth Goetzinger (3-5, 2 R), O’Connor (2-2, 2B, R), Jax (1-3, RBI, 2 R), Gathje (1-3, RBI) and Nolte (2 RBI).  The Warriors ended the week hosting River Falls, Wis.  Trailing 1-0 in the third, Caledonia had five-run inning.  Two-run hits by Klug (double) and Vonderohe (single) were big.  The Warriors added two more in the fifth and prevailed 7-3.  Klug (2-4, two 2Bs, 2 RBI, 2 R) and Casey Schultz (2-3, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R) had multiple hits. Kunelius (1-2, RBI, R) and Vonderohe (1-1, 2 RBI) added RBIs.  The later picked up the win (6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 6 K, 7 K).  It was Caledonia’s seventh straight after a 4-3 loss to PEM to start the season (just days after basketball season ended).  The River Falls game was the only win where the Warriors haven’t scored 10 runs.  Caledonia (5-1, 7-1) is ranked #7 in Class AA.  The Warriors are tied with L-A (5-1, 5-3) atop the TRC East.  La Crescent (3-1, 3-2) also has one loss.  PEM (6-1, 6-1) leads the West.

Chatfield’s Austin Koenigs dives back in safe at first base, as Caledonia’s Casey Schultz also gets dirty. Chatfield came back from down 7-4 to tie 7-7, only for the Warriors to have a 3-run seventh and post a 10-7 win.

GMLOK Softball Overwhelms Opponents

At least two opponents weren’t stalwart, but wins by large margins are wins by large margins. GMLOK softball whipped three foes by a collective score of 41-1 to post a 3-0 week.  John Fenske’s group started with a non-conference win over Triton, 7-1.  A five-run fourth was the Bulldogs big inning.  Pitcher Lily Hughes (7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 10 K, Win) made it tough on the Cobras.  It was her third 10-plus strikeout game.  Morgan Langeslag (1-3, 2 RBI, R), Zoe Scrabeck (1-4, 2B, 2 RBI), Kennedy Fenske (1-2, 2B, R), Lucie Voigt (1-3, 2B, 2 R), and Emily Miner (1-3, RBI, R) provided the ‘O’.  A night later, L/P came to town and was overwhelmed 15-0 in four innings. Hughes (4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, Win, 1-4, RBI, 3 R), Nicole Hanson (3-3, 2 RBI, R), Scrabeck (1-3, RBI, 3 R), Langeslag (1-3, RBI, 2 R), Alexys Harwood (1-3, RBI, R), Voigt (1-2, RBI), and Audrey Webster (1-1, RBI, R) made it a team effort.  On Thursday, things were similar at Schaeffer Academy.  The Lions fell 19-0 in four innings.  Emily Miner (2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 0-0, 2 RBI, 2 R, 3 BB) and Scrabeck (2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 1-2, R) combined for the perfect game (12 Lions batters up, 12 down with zero base runners).  Lion pitching authored 21 walks.  Twelve different Bulldogs drew one while seven walked at least twice.  Hughes (1-3, 2 RBI), Voigt (1-2, RBI, 2 R), Harwood (1-1, 2 RBI, 2 R), and Brooke Kolden (0-0, 2 RBI, 2 R, 3 BB) led the offense.  The senior pitcher Hughes (6-1) has 54 strikeouts against only six walks in 33 innings pitched with a .424 ERA.  The Bulldogs (5-1, 7-1) have just one loss, in extra innings to Southland.  They received a vote for state ranking in Class AA.

GMLOKS Girls T/F Nips Bulldogs at PEM

It’s been a different year for track and field due to COVID.  Meets can only have so many kids. Many invites are with just three or four teams.  GMLOKS’ squads took on the PEM Invite, which happened over two nights because of the numbers.  The girls (74.5) came away with their third win of the year, nipping PEM (70.5) while also beating Cotter (40).  Coach Aaron Thauwald got wins from Hailey Hindt (100-hurdles, 300-hurdles), Anika Reiland (200), Kaylin Mensink (400), Lexy Foster (Shot Put), the 4×200 (McKenna Hendrickson, A-Reiland, Anna Oehlke, H-Hindt), and 4×400 (Shelby Beck, Hendrickson, A-Reiland, Chantle Reiland).  C-Reiland (100) added a second.  Naomi Warmka (1,600), Kendyl Queensland (High Jump – tie), Lauren Queensland (Long Jump), Becca Hoffman (Discus), the 4×100 (C-Reiland, Katie Poppenhagen, Emma Grafe, Oehlke), and 4×800** took second.  H-Hindt (Triple Jump), Oehlke (200), L-Queensland (400), and Beck (Pole Vault) added thirds. A night later, Austin O’Hare’s boys trekked to Elgin and took second (90) to PEM (132) ahead of Stewartville (72), Cotter (40), and Lake City (37).  Luke Speer (200), Christian Hjelmen (800), the 4×200 (Jacob Kerrins, Speer, Blake Ludemann, James Howard), and 4×800 (Hjelmen, Andrew Imm, Garrison Hubka, Ethan Imm) took first.  Speer (L-Jump), J-Howard (100), Cam Ruechel (400), Ayden Howard (110-H), Riley Paul (Shot), and the 4×100 (Brendon Kennedy, E-Imm, Ludemann, Speer) took second.  Paul (Discus) and Hubka (1,600) added thirds.

Gopher Baseball Posts 3-1 Week

With its only loss coming to Caledonia (above), Chatfield baseball posted a 3-1 week.  On Monday, the Gophers and GMLOK played one “The Babe,” “Yas,” or “Mick” would’ve enjoyed. The first run was Chatfield’s first batter.  Seth Goetzinger was hit by a pitch, then stole two bases.  He scored on an error for a 1-0 lead.  GMLOK tied it in the third.  Cole Kruegel led off with a single, made second on an error, and third on a walk.  Dustin Copley’s RBI ground ball tied the game at 1-1.  Those were the only two runs scored the first six innings.  It was a pitching duel.   The teams combined for just nine hits.  GMLOK’s Dustin Copley set down 11 straight at one point.  Heading to the seventh, it was still 1-1.  In the top of the inning, Bulldog Lucas Heusinkveld authored a one-out single.  Copley, ye of home runs in his previous three games, blasted a 300-plus-foot double to center.  Heusinkveld scored.  GM went ahead 2-1.  But Copley had to come out in the bottom of the seventh per the pitch count (110).  He did so with one out and Gopher runners on the corners.  Goetzinger tied the game with an RBI ground out, sending it to extra innings.  There, Gopher reliever Luke Carrier put GM down 1-2-3.   To start the Gopher 8th, Henry Gathje reached on an error.  He moved up to second on a stolen base/wild pitch.  Caden Nolte then delivered the walk-off RBI-single to give Chatfield the 3-2 win!  Goetzinger (0-2, RBI, R, 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 6 K, No Decision) did double work.  Carrier (4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) picked up the win.  Nolte (2-4, RBI) and Connor Jax (2-3) each had two hits.  Goetzinger, Jackson Schild, and Gathje scored.  Copley (6 1/3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 9 K) took a tough loss. He had both GMLOK RBIs (1-3, 2B, 2 RBI).  Heusinkveld (1-3, R) and Kruegel (1-3, R) scored.  Gavin Sweeney (1-3, 2B) had GM’s other hit.  Chatfield then took on Cotter.  Nolte got 18 outs without a single strikeout in pitching a shut-out.  Chatfield out-hit Cotter 15 to 3 and posted 6-0 win.  Nolte (3-5, 4 RBI, 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K, Win) was Mr. dual-use.  Jax (3-4, 2B, R), Aug (1-3, RBI, 2 R), Gathje (2-3, R), Tate Karver (2-4), and Austin Koenigs (1-3, R) helped.  The Gophers then lost to Caledonia 10-7 (See “Warrior Baseball…”).  Brian Baum’s re-grouped, ending the week with an extra inning win over Stewartville.  Chatfield led 4-3 entering the seventh, but two singles and a fly-out plated the tying run.  The Tigers seemingly were poised for more with runners on second and third with two out.  Nolte got a strikeout to end the frame.  Stewartville had four hits in the inning (including a double) but only scored one run.  In Chatfield’s eighth, with two outs, Jax was hit by a pitch.  Back-to-back walks loaded the bases.  A passed ball then ended the affair.  Jax scored the winning run.  Chatfield prevailed 5-4!  Karver (2-4, RBI, R) and Gathje (2-3, 3B, RBI, R) had multiple hits.  Jax (1-2, R) and Nolte (1-4, RBI) helped.  Four Gopher pitchers tossed innings with Nolte (2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K) getting the win.  He improved to 3-0.  With the solid week, Chatfield improves to 4-2, 6-3.  They trail PEM (6-1, 6-1) in the TRC-West.

Chatfield softball (#10 in AA) lost a ranked-versus-ranked battle with Cotter (#3 in Class AA, 5-0, 5-1) 10-0 in six innings.  The score was 3-0 heading to the sixth before Cotter scored seven runs.  Chatfield has dropped five straight to Cotter, going scoreless in all five games.  The previous four losses were by a combined 9-0 score. The Gophers (5-1, 7-2) rebounded by beating Cal/SG.  They lead a crowded TRC-West ahead of W-K (3-1, 4-1), St. Charles (5-2, 8-2), and PEM (5-2, 7-2).  Mabel-Canton’s Kenidi McCabe had a huge week at the plate (10-15, three 2Bs, HR, 10 RBI, 10 R), as the Cougars went 2-2 in games, total score M-C 48, opponents 38.  Spring Grove’s Isaac Griffin struck out 12 and got the win as the Lion baseball held on to beat Mabel-Canton 6-5.  Cougar Cayden Tollefsrud had two triples in the game and struck out 11 in defeat.  It was one of two one-run losses for M-C, which beat Houston 12-2 for its first win.  Tollefsrud had a double, a triple, and 3 RBI.  FC/L baseball also picked up its first win, downing Houston 14-2.  Caiden Olson struck out 10, but the ‘Canes also fell 4-2 to Schaeffer Academy.  GMLOK baseball beat Schaeffer 27-9 in the blow-out of the week.  Chatfield boys and girls track each won a three-team home meet.  Jaelyn LaPlante (200, High Jump, Long Jump) had three firsts for the girls.  Sam Backer (100, 200, 4×200), Alex Rowland (800, 4×400, 4×800), and Treyton Lanning (1,600, 4×400, 4×800) had three total firsts for the boys.  FC’s Jake Fishbaugher (37) had the lowest golf score of the week as FC fell to W-K.  Lanesboro’s boys won two matches to stay perfect on the year (6-0) including topping Southland 172-187.  Caden Anderson (40) and Cale Anderson (41) had the team’s low scores (both versus the Rebels).  LARP’s boys (5-1) lost their first match of the year, 160 to 178 versus LC/H.  Andrew Hoiness shot a 40 in the loss, medaled with a 38 in a win over Caledonia.  Warrior girls golf (4-0, 5-0) and FC girls golf (4-0) each stayed perfect with wins.  Alexa Agin (LARP, 42) and Jenna Wiebke (Caledonia, 43) shot the two lowest girls scores of the week.  Wiebke, a senior who finished 14th at state in 2019, has medaled in all five of the Warrior matches.
