Virgil Losen obituary , Fillmore County Journal

Virgil A. Losen, age 62, of Decorah, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at Wellington Place in Decorah, following a battle with cancer.

Virgil was born on May 7, 1963, in Caledonia, Minn., to Alton and Violette (Erickson) Losen. He grew up in the Hesper area and attended North Winneshiek School. He was baptized and confirmed at Hesper Lutheran Church.

Virgil worked as an equipment operator/truck driver for several companies over the years and hauled livestock for local farmers.  He also spent time working on the family farm, taking pride in his Ford and Massey tractors. Virgil enjoyed going to auctions, fixing and selling machinery, and spending time outdoors – especially hunting, trapping, and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle. He attended the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally for over 30 years.

Virgil liked being around animals and held a special place in his heart for his cat Sunshine.  He also spent many morning breakfasts at the Coop visiting with friends and local farmers.

He is survived by his parents Alton and Violette Losen of Decorah; siblings Lynette (Duane) Falck of Decorah, Kathy (Dominic) Wathier of Mabel, Brian (Vicki) Losen of Decorah, and Mark Losen of Decorah. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews: Teresa (Jeff) Phillips, Stacey (Dan) Praska, Jennifer (Joe) White, Davis (Lauren) Olsgard, Elizabeth Wathier, Joseph Wathier, Emma Wathier, Mitchell Losen, Brett Losen, Samantha Christopher, Cheyenne Christopher, and Danielle Losen; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 20 at Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper, Iowa, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel, Minn., is assisting the family with arrangements.

In honor of Virgil, if you have a motorcycle, please feel free to ride to the service and park your bike in front of the church. Virgil would appreciate all of the motorcycles on display.
