Truman Hollis Omodt, 88 years old, of Spring Grove, Minn., went home to be with his Lord. He passed away on Ash Wednesday at 7:32 a.m. at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital, in La Crosse, Wis. He went quietly and peacefully after a short illness, with his wife by his side, on March 5, 2025. Another branch tragically fell from the family tree.
Truman was born on February 24, 1937, to Theodore and Hazel (Storlie) Omodt, their only surviving child of six children, two were full-term still born, and three only lived a few days to a month.
Truman married Donna Bjergum, his first wife, on Novemner 30, 1968, in Mabel First Lutheran, the two did not have any children of their own. Donna passed away on April 27, 2017.
Truman worked the family farm with his parents, then later by himself just one mile down a dead end gravel road, three miles south, of Spring Grove that the township had named Truman Drive. They sold the farm when Donna got sick and moved into town and worked for Deco Tool and Die in Decorah, Iowa, for ten years before retiring.
Truman had a great love for working with wood, making beautiful China hutches, end tables, animal carvings, and some beautiful Christmas ornaments. He loved birds, having several bird feeders that he was able to watch out of his bay window, he had a deep passion for flowers, and had flowers, flowers everywhere, that were especially for Donna. Truman was an excellent chair volleyball player, playing most Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Truman was extremely proud of his Norwegian heritage. In March 2022, he got to go to Norway for the first time and visited relatives and got to see where his grandmother and ancestors lived and grew up. Truman, along with his parents, were lifelong members of Sons of Norway. Truman was a member for 72 years,
Truman came from a very strong Christian background, growing up in Black Hammer Lutheran Church, and had a deep love for the Lord. In the last 3-4 years, he has been rotating and going to Christ Is Lord Church and was ecstatic to become an official member in December 2024.
Truman had a very sweet and very loving and easy going, gentle soul about him. He will be very deeply, deeply missed not only by his wife, sisters-in-law and cousins, but by his church family and all the people of Spring Grove.
Deep heartfelt thank you to the doctors and staff, both from the E.R., the 6th floor and 4th floor, showing such love and compassion for Truman in his last days.
Funeral services for Truman will be held on Friday, March 14, 2025, at 10 a.m. at Christ is Lord First Free Lutheran Church, 1269 County Rd PH, in Onalaska, Wis. The burial will be in the Faith Lutheran Cemetery, Black Hammer, Minn. Friends may call from 9-10 a.m. on Friday at the church.
