The 2016-2017 sports season in Fillmore County was a special one. None in the Journal Sports era produced so many teams with so many good to great seniors, so much senior depth. It seemed just before Y-2-K, a lot of athletic parents were spawning gifted offspring. From state track champion D-1 signees/gridiron juggernauts, to all-time leading scorers, 2,000-assists, … [Read more...]

Fillmore Central School Board approved moving forward with creating an Alternative Learning Program at a school board meeting held February 28, 2017. Two By “Fore”; FC Girls State Runner-Up
They’ll kick themselves for a little while. They’ll rehash those three-puts that could’ve been two’s, or curse those puts that just lipped out, or fret that wayward drive that led to a six or a seven, or lament not staying mentally strong that one hole, buckling down to save one stroke. They’ll spite that one hole at Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker, cup on a ridge, sucking … [Read more...]
Sauer Starts, Broadwater Ends Strong at Boys State Golf
While the Fillmore Central girls’ team was a big story at state golf, an individual Falcon also wrote a great narrative, at least for the first 18 holes. Senior Delton Sauer went out and shot a 38 and a 39 to start the state meet. His 77 had him sitting tied for fifth overall after Day One. He was one of just four golfers with two sub-40 scores Day One. It was his best … [Read more...]

Falcon Girls Golf Four-peats, Heads Back to State
The dynasty continues. That it does, isn’t a huge surprise. Fillmore Central girls golf was last year’s Class A State Champion. They returned three of their top four golfers. They lost their coach (Lane Powell) before the season started. But the new coach, Aaron Mensink, was an assistant the past few years. The Falcons lost their first meet (to Class AA La Crescent), but … [Read more...]
Falcon Boys Section Runner-Up, Broadwater/Sauer Make State
On the guys’ side of things, Fillmore Central (367) sat in second place behind Blooming Prairie (342) after Day One. The Falcons shot a better Day Two score (357), but couldn’t make up the difference. BP (342/339 > 681) was crowned Section 1A champion. FC (367/357 > 724) beat out Lewiston-Altura (374/351 > 725) for Runner-Up. Individually, two county athletes … [Read more...]
A Steamy State Track and Field Meet
On a couple very steamy June days, twenty-one total athletes from the four Journal covered track and field programs took part in the 2017 state meet. Six athletes or teams made the medal stand. The GMLOKS girls 4x200 relay squad (senior Katelyn Luthe, junior Emily Hovden, freshman Riley Queensland, sophomore Lauren Buchholtz) headed the cast. A medal stand maker last year … [Read more...]
Six By Six, Track Athletes Head to State
It should have been one elite southeastern Minnesota athlete’s Section 1A track and field swansong. Instead, his magnificent high school career ended semi-ceremoniously. Six individuals and a spectacular six relays from the FCJ-covered track and field programs covered for him. Ashley Agrimson qualified for state Day One of the Section meet. The RPH senior finished third in … [Read more...]
Not-So Memorable Memorial Day
Fillmore Central/Lanesboro, Rushford-Peterson, and GMLOK baseball each made it to Memorial Day by winning two of their first three play-offs games. The Falcons and Trojans then suffered heart-breaking losses while the Bulldogs had some fun offensively, but were vanquished nonetheless. At Winona State, Dan Mlsna’s Trojans (5-seed, 9-14) almost continued their low-seed run. … [Read more...]
