An exciting change has taken place in Lanesboro, Minn., as Stone Mill Hotel & Suites has new owners as of March 1, 2025.
Annie Kang and her husband Adam McCabe have taken over ownership of the historic and genuinely unique business located at 102 Beacon St. E. in Lanesboro.
Adam knows the Lanesboro area well, growing up near Lanesboro and graduating from Lanesboro High School. He lived in Winona, Minn., for a while and then moved to Chicago for approximately 17 years.
“Most of my life has been spent in the service industry between working at bars and restaurants, things like that, a little bit of management work before moving back to Minnesota,” stated Adam. He currently works as a manager at Tom Kadlec KIA in Rochester, Minn.
Annie was born in Evanston, Ill., and was raised in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. After attending Le Cordon Bleu culinary school in Chicago, she was the dining manager at a country club before moving to Minnesota.
The couple married in 2014 and in 2017, with one child at the time, they decided to move to Minnesota. Although they loved living in Chicago, “we preferred to raise our family in the southeastern Minnesota area,” explained Adam.
Annie began working at Stone Mill Hotel & Suites as soon as they moved to Minnesota. Initially living in Chatfield, Minn., for five years, Annie had taken on more of a management role by that time, which is why the couple decided to move their family, which includes their children Mia and Carson, from Chatfield to Lanesboro three years ago, so she could be closer to the business.
So, when the opportunity arose to purchase the business, it seemed like a good fit. “It was kind of like a nice training process,” explained Annie, learning the ropes the last several years before eventually purchasing the business. Annie will be running the hotel while Adam continues his current employment.
“There was a lot to learn, like the bookkeeping, the buying for the boutique; there is a lot involved, so it’s not just the hotel, it’s the store as well,” noted Annie.
Stone Mill Clothing and Gifts boutique is located in the hotel and is open seven days a week all year long. The boutique offers a variety of quality clothing and accessories.
The hotel has 13 guest rooms ranging from guest rooms with “large double whirlpool bathtubs and iron-claw fireplaces to standard rooms,” according to the business website stonemillsuites.com and each room can accommodate 2-8 guests, depending on the room. A continental breakfast, including delicious pastries from the Lanesboro Pastry Shoppe, is included with your stay.
The rich history of the building is reason enough to stay at the hotel and the amazing staff is a reason to return time and again. “I couldn’t do it without them, they really know every part of the business too, which helps, often times I will consult them before making any sort of decision,” explained Annie. There are currently three full-time employees and five part-time employees.
Annie and Adam are very thankful to the Lamon family, which includes Colleen, who originally started the business in 2001 with her parents Rick and Cheryl. “We are fortunate they considered us,” stated Adam.
The new owners do not plan on making any changes to the business. “We want to try to continue on what the Lamons have done for 20 years,” stated Adam.
“A lot of people ask if we will be making changes, and to be quite honest, they spent a long time building the business up to what it is now, and if it isn’t broken, why try to change it,” commented Annie. “We are grateful for that; it really is a turnkey business.”
The couple are also grateful for the support they have received from family, friends, the community, and new and returning guests. “We have had lots of good wishes, that’s for sure,” stated Adam.
