The state-ranked volleyball rematch between No. 8 Spring Grove at No. 5 Mabel-Canton went much like their previous conference clash. The gymnasium was wall-to-wall and stage-packed with fans. The Lions again won the first set before the Cougars captured the final three sets and the match, 3-1 (SG 25-21, MC 25-23, 25-21, 25-14). The two middle sets were much more competitive than in the September match. Set two was tied 23-23 before Mabel-Canton closed with two kills.

With this decision, the Cougars (28-2, 13-0 SEC) clinched the outright SEC East Division championship, their 25th consecutive conference crown. The Lions (20-4, 11-2 SEC) will be runners-up for a second straight season.

Compared to the teams’ first meeting, The Lions had more 13 more kills but also eight more hitting errors. Thus, their hitting efficiency of 13% was nearly the same as their previous 14%. Mabel-Canton achieved 18%, a drop-off from the 30% they enjoyed back in September at Spring Grove. The Cougars scored 57 points at the net (5 kills, 2 blocks) to the Lions’ 55 (47 kills, 8 blocks).

Addyson McHugh led SG scoring with 17 kills, 3 blocks and 3 ace serves. Kenadee Gerard added 18 kills and Jordis Neeley 9, the latter in her most extended time on the court. Saijal Slafter and Kinley Soiney each had 19 kills for the Cougars.

Spring Grove served a strong 98% with 6 aces and only 2 misfires. But M-C was close at 95% with 7 aces and 5 errors. McHugh served 24 of 24 with 3 aces while Sydney Holland went 11 for 11 with 2 aces and Maggie Lile 10 for 10 with an ace. The Cougars countered with Makenzie Kelly (15-15, 2 aces) and Kailey Ingvalson  (21-22, 3 aces).

In set one, SG edged ahead at 13-12 at the start of a 5-point run and nursed narrow leads the rest of the way to win, 25-21. The Lions then appeared doomed in set two with a 12-5 deficit, but they rallied with a 6-point run to tie at 15-all. Down 23-20, Grove rallied again to tie at 23 before the Cougars won, 25-23.

Set three was tied 10 times. Grove led 13-12 before a 5-to-1 spurt put the Cougars ahead 17-14 on the way to a 25-21 win. Set four was all Mabel-Canton as the Lions could not overcome more hitting errors than kills.

The B-team Lions (12-1) experienced their first defeat of the season as Mabel-Canton earned a season split. SG had not dropped a set all year until falling 25-21 in the first set at M-C. The Lions came back to take set two, 25-19, but the Cougars won set three, 15-12.

The C-team/freshmen Lions (9-2-1) tied their match, 1-1, losing set one 21-25 before wining 28-26).
