Stanley Andrew Engen, 99, of Caledonia, Minn., died Saturday, December 11, 2021, at Northgate Care Center, Waukon, Iowa.
He was born in Caledonia, Minn., on October 18, 1922, to Peter and Celia (Myhre) Engen, the fourth of five children. He attended Caledonia High School. He was drafted to the United States Armed Forces in 1943 for the WWII effort in the European Theatre and was honorably discharged in 1946.
Stanley went on to many jobs, such as carpentry and truck driving. He started a company in Caledonia, Minn., called Engen Truck Lines. He met and married his wife of 64 years, Eleanor Skifton in 1957. Together they bought their farm in Wilmington Township in 1958. There they farmed until Stanley was 88 years old in 2010. He was very proud of his beef operation. Many farmers in the area will remember him mostly for his sales of Madison Silos and feed automation equipment. He loved to help farmers automate their livestock feeding operations.
He enjoyed fishing in local creeks, Northern MN as well as Canada. Stanley and Eleanor took memorable vacations in the United States and in later years, he was able to return to Germany to visit the hospital where he was a medic in WWII.
He is survived by his wife Eleanor of 64 years, and by four children: David Engen of Caledonia, Bob (Tammi) Engen of Caledonia, Christine (Randy) Streukens of Winona, and Brad (Jessica) Engen of Faribault; 10 grandchildren: Tyler Engen (Bethany), Kyle Engen, Jesse Engen (Samantha), Angela Engen, Andrew Engen, Ben Streukens (Kristin), Sam Streukens, Katherine Sime-Engen, Brock Engen, Eleanor Engen; and three great-grandchildren: Graham, Elling and Anders Engen; and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
Stanley was a lifelong member of Wilmington Lutheran Church. He was a 32nd degree Osman Temple Shriner, Scottish Rites and Masons, VFW 3833, American Legion 191.
Stanley was blessed to live a long, productive life. For most of that time, he was able to share his struggles and rewards with his devoted wife, Eleanor. She carried the load when he couldn’t toward the end of his time on this earth. His stay in the nursing home was brief because of her loving care at home. She remained by his side, giving her great care even in the nursing home.
Visitation will be at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Caledonia, Minn., 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday December 22, 2021 and from 10-11 a.m. on Thursday December 23, at Immanuel with funeral services following at 11 a.m. Please direct memorials to Wilmington Lutheran Church Endowment Fund or Immanuel Lutheran Church.
