Stanley A. Nelson, age 72, of Mabel, Minn., died Wednesday, March 13, 2019, at Gundersen Hospital in La Crosse, Wis.
Stanley was born May 2, 1946, in the Big Woods area near Amherst to James and Norma (Blagsvedt) Nelson. He was confirmed at Mabel First Lutheran Church and attended Newburg and Mabel schools. He served four years in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War.
On June 23, 1972, he married Marcia Mathison in Lanesboro. He worked as a mechanic at Redwing Bros. Chevrolet, Amdahl Chevrolet, and Radcliff Oil in Cresco. He lived his entire life in Mabel and loved to drive his Buick around town and see who was playing cards in the morning. He loved to stop at the Mabel Legion to visit with friends. He was a member of the Mabel First Lutheran Church, Mabel American Legion, and a lifetime member of the Mabel Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Stanley is survived by his wife Marcia and son Ronald of Mabel, sisters Beatrice Sjarpe, Diane Thorson, Carolyn (Steve) Gulbranson, Cheryl (Dan) Wiste, Marianne (Paul) Rosaaen, Sandy (Kevin) Nelson, and Dorene Nelson; brothers-in-law Mark (Diane), Mike, and Murrel (Patti Solie) Mathison, and sister-in-law Maureen Sorum; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant son and daughter; his parents, two brothers Richard and Manford; a sister; Darlyne Messner; brothers-in-laws Leon Messner, Norman Sjarpe, Robert Thorson, and Wayne Sorum; sisters-in-law Jeannette Nelson and Donna Nelson.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2019, at the Henrytown Lutheran Church in rural Harmony, with the Reverend Elliott Malm officiating. Burial will be in the Mabel Lutheran Cemetery with military honors by the Mabel American Legion. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday, March 18 at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church.
