For the Spring Grove boys, the final week of the regular season began as expected with a comfortable May 17 double-header sweep of winless Schaeffer Academy with almost identical scores of 13-3 and 13-2. However, the 11-10 home upset setback to Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons was not expected after the Lions had won convincingly, 21-10, earlier in the season at Glenville. The May 19 rematch result denied Spring Grove in its last chance to share the conference championship. The Lions did not play championship-caliber baseball but almost won anyway. A game-ending, line-drive double play snuffed out a last-inning Spring Grove rally.
The next day, it was an entirely different loss in a non-conference contest. After the error-plagued meltdown vs. AC/GE, the Lions had no miscues at Preston in a 10-0 run-rule disappointment versus Fillmore Central/Lanesboro. There had been some success against AC/GE pitching, but there was only one base hit against Falcon left-handed ace Cooper Ferrie.
Spring Grove closed the regular season at 11-7 with a third-place 10-4 conference record, one game ahead of fourth-place AC/GE (10-8, 9-5 SEC). Schaeffer dropped to 0-20 (0-14 SEC). Fillmore Central/Lanesboro improved to 6-11.
Spring Grove opens the 15-team Section 1A Tournament with the No. 7 seed, hosting No. 10 Wabasha-Kellogg (6-13) on May 25. Eleven of those 13 W-K losses came against Class AA teams.
SG 13, Schaeffer Academy 3 (6 innings)
Impressively, there were no errors in a game with the ball being hit all over the park with the teams combining for 20 base hits. However, there were plenty of thefts. Eight Lions contributed to 13 stolen bases, including four thefts from Matthew Doering and two by Braedon Solie. Eight Lions contributed to 12 base hits, including Elijah Solum (2 for 4) with a triple while Caleb Griffin and Tysen Grinde (1 for 1) each had a double.
It began with the first four Lion batters of the game scoring during an opening six-run onslaught. It ended with a single by Jaxon Strinmoen (2 for 4, 2 RBI) driving in Grinde to achieve a 10-run rule win with only one out in the bottom of the sixth inning.
SG 13, Schaeffer Academy 2
Elijah Solum batted 4 for 4, with a triple and a double, while driving in two runs and stealing two bases while freshman catcher Ezra Griffin went 3 for 5 with a whopping four runs batted in. The first three batters of the game scored as Spring Grove jumped out to a 3-0 lead and would add runs in every inning except one.
The pitching win was credited to freshman Ben Udstuen, who during three innings of relief, allowed no runs and only one hit while striking out six and walking one. Schaeffer, managing only two hits, needed a combination of six walks and two hit batters to avoid a shutout. Spring Grove now has an 11-6 all-time record against Schaeffer Academy.
Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons 11, SG 10
It looked like the Lions might survive a six-error, sub-par performance with the potential tying run on third base and the winning run on second. But a hard-hit line drive to third base ended the game with an unassisted double play.
The visitors scored first, but Spring Grove answered with a six-run salvo for an early 6-1 lead after the first inning. It was 7-2 before AC/GE put together back-to-back, four-run innings. Three Lion errors figured into that first big inning, and two more miscues helped AC/GE take a 10-7 lead in the top of the fifth. Only three of the visitors’ 11 runs were earned runs.
Spring Grove would never catch up but twice got back within a run. It was 10-9 going into the final seventh inning. The final Lion error, a wild pitch and a passed ball helped the visitors make it 11-9. In the bottom of that final seventh frame, a walk and two hit batters set the stage for Solum’s sacrifice fly to make it 11-10 with only one out and runners on second and third. But it was not to be.
Logan Brumm had a big Lion bat, going 2 for 2 with a double while driving in five runs. Jonah Udstuen batted 2 for 3, stole two bases, drove in one run and scored three times himself.
AC/GE broke a seven-game losing streak in the series versus Spring Grove. The Lions still lead all-time, 8-2, against the combined program. But before sharing with Alden-Conger, G-E alone won 15 and lost only five versus Spring Grove.
Fillmore Central/Lanesboro 10, SG 0
There were only three Lion base runners – catcher interference in the third inning, a single by Jonah Udstuen in the fifth and a walk in the sixth before the game ended an inning early with the 10-run rule. Ferrie, a junior lefty, struck out eight and walked only one.
For the Falcons, Dillon O’Connor batted 3 for 4 with a double and two runs batted in. Jordan Peterson (1 for 4) had the other 2-bagger.
Since Spring Grove resurrected the baseball program in 2016, the Lions have won two and lost three versus the Falcons.
