Spring Grove sustains one-hit softball setback at Mabel-Canton

May 5, 2023 by Lee Epps

Eighth grader Izabel Kaufman had the lone Spring Grove base hit in the 15-0 softball loss at Mabel-Canton on May 2. That single came during the second inning with two outs and the Lions trailing 3-0. Tylar Wenthold tossed the one-hit shutout while striking out six and walking only two. The game ended in the fourth inning with the run rule. It was a non-conference contest, since the Lions (0-6) are playing an independent schedule this spring

The other Spring Grove batters to reach base did so in the third inning with a Cougar error and two walks to load the bases with two outs. The threat ended with a ground ball to first base.

The Cougars (6-4, 4-3 SEC) scored 15 runs on 12 hits, including a three-RBI triple by Kailey Ingvalson and an RBI double from Wenthold. Mabel-Canton also benefited by some Spring Grove charity: seven errors, four walks and a hit batter.
