Spring Grove girls turn away Grand Meadow, 3-0

October 1, 2022 by Lee Epps

The Spring Grove volleyball girls scored five of the final six points to overtake visiting Grand Meadow in the first set and then went on to less dramatic decisions in the next two sets to sweep the Superlarks, 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-15) on Sept. 22. Grand Meadow, the current the leader in the SEC West Division left the court at 8-5 (6-2 SEC). The state-ranked No. 9 Lions remained in second place in the SEC East at 13-1 (7-1 SEC).

Neither team was as sharp as desired; Spring Grove was not in top form with 38 kills and 17 attack errors (15% efficiency), but that was far better than the visitors 0% efficiency, with just as many attack miscues (24) as kills (24). The Lions increased their advantage at the net with a solid 8-block performance, while GM scored with three rejections.

The Superlarks, however, were better at the service line with 6 aces and only 2 misfires (56 for 58, 97%). Spring Grove – for the second straight match – finished with more service errors (8) than aces (7) while serving 89%. Kenadee Gerard was one exception while serving 14 for 15 with 3 aces. And there was one ace without error from Addyson McHugh (13 for 13).

Maggie Lile defended with 13 digs along with 11 saves each from Kendal VanMinsel and McHugh. Katelyn Kraus contributed to 5 blocks. McHugh had one solo block and 2 block assists. On offense, VanMinsel provided 30 set assists while Gerard scored with 10 kills, McHugh 8 kills, Lydia Solum 8 and Joelle Halverson 6.

The Lion B-team remained unbeaten at 8-0 while sweeping both sets against GM, 25-7and 25-21. The C-team/freshmen (6-2) also defeated the Larks, 25-22 and 25-19.
