Kinley Soiney tossed in 23 points and Kylie Hammel 21 plus 8 rebounds as the visiting, Spring Grove girls ripped LeRoy-Ostrander 67-45. Emerson Ingvalson was solid all-around with 7 points and 7 rebounds plus game-high totals of 6 assists and 7 steals. The season records became reversed with the Lions improving to 18-2 (12-0 SEC) and the Cardinals falling to 2-18 (2-11 SEC).
The newly state-ranked No. 20 Lions wasted little time while bolting out to a 20-2 lead, an 18-point advantage in a game they eventually won by 22. The Cardinals were quickly overwhelmed by Spring Grove’s pressure defense, which came away with six steals during 11 early LeRoy-Ostrander possessions.
Hammel hit 3 of 6 shots beyond the 3-point arc, but the rest of the Lions went 2 for 22 from downtown. However, Spring Grove shot a hot 58% inside the arc and outshot the Cards overall, 41% to 32%. The Lions controlled the backboards with a 44-to-25 rebounding bulge.
Taking care of the ball was critical to success. Seventeen of the eventual 27 Cardinal turnovers came before halftime. With eight first-half turnovers, the Lions outscored their hosts 36-17 by halftime. With 12 turnovers after the break, Grove outscored L-O only 31-28 in the second half.
Spring Grove has won 42 of the last 43 games against LeRoy-Ostrander, including the last six and a 70-51 home decision earlier this season.
