Spring Grove Girls Survive Grand Meadow Rally, 51-47

February 16, 2024 by Lee Epps

Siri Konkel scored two late field goals and assisted on a game-clinching 3-point basket by Brinley Middendorf as the Spring Grove girls turned away defending SEC West Division champion Grand Meadow, 51-47. The Superlarks trailed by 14 points before rallying back within one point with Lexy Foster’s fourth 3-ball with 75 seconds remaining. Middendorf had not attempted a 3-pointer all game until making it a two-possession Lion lead with 15 seconds remaining.

It was a critical conference contest as the Lions (12-2, 8-0 SEC) remained atop the SEC standings, while the Superlarks (8-6, 4-3 SEC) fell three games behind in the loss column.

Konkel finished with a game-high 19 points (9 for 14 shooting) and 4 assists with only a single turnover. Foster achieved a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double while GM teammate Lauren Queensland scored 13 points.

The Lions were outrebounded, 31-25, and were outscored from 3-point range, 21-12, but had only 10 turnovers and out-shot the visitors overall, 42% to 34%. Spring Grove used a 16-to2 run to take a 10-point lead into halftime. Grand Meadow rallied with a 15 to 4 run to put the outcome in doubt until the final few seconds.

The Lion B-team (8-1) won, 44-21. SG took the eighth grade game, 28-25, and the seventh grade game, 29-11.
