Spring Grove girls open with loss to Lanesboro

December 1, 2022 by Lee Epps Leave a Comment

The Spring Grove basketball girls could not stay with defending East Division champion Lanesboro as the Lions dropped their 2022-‘23 season and home opener, 62-35, on Nov. 29. Already having played twice and with a pair of 6-foot returning all-conference seniors, Kaci Ruen and Jessie Schreiber, the Burros (2-1, 1-0 SEC) dominated inside with a huge 42-to-18 rebounding margin. On the perimeter, freshman point guard Jensyn Storhoff, was able to direct the Burro attack (4 assists) and create her own shots as well. Storhoff, who had received Honorable Mention All-SEC last year as an eighth grader, poured in 20 points while Ruen (who averaged a double-double last year) scored 22 points along with 13 rebounds and 3 steals. Schreiber added 10 points, 7 boards and 4 assists.

For Spring Grove, sophomore Emerson Ingvalson and freshman Kylie Hammel each scored 10 points while battling an effective Lanesboro zone defense. The Burro defenders did not force a lot of turnovers, but they did not permit many good shots close to the basket. And the Lions did not shoot well from the perimeter, going only 3 for 21 from 3-point land, a frustrating 14%. Overall, LHS got the ball inside and with 16 rebound points, shot a very strong 51%, while SG shot 29% from the field. When the Burros did fire away from 3-point range, they hit half of them (4 for 8) with all four by Storhoff.

With Spring Grove not able to consistently penetrate the defense, Lanesboro committed only six fouls, limiting the Lions to only six free throws (4 for 6). The Burros were unimpressive at the foul line (6 for 14, 43%), but the game was decided by rebounds and the LHS zone defense.

Spring Grove was still in the game at halftime, trailing 32-21, but the Lions added only 14 points in the second half while the visitors enjoyed a 13-point run, followed by a 10-point run to lead by as many as 28 (60-32).

While it was the season opener for Spring Grove and new head coach Taylor Elton, it was the third game for Lanesboro. Coach Bret Klaehn said the Burros had already made adjustments after facing two larger Class AA clubs – a loss to Chatfield and a win over St. Charles.

The teams split last year with the home team prevailing in both cases. Lanesboro has won four of the last five versus Spring Grove, but the Lions lead the all-time series, 49 wins to 22.

The B-team game went down to the wire with Lanesboro winning, 29-26. The Burros also took the seventh grade game, 22-2.
