Spring Grove girls in control of Cardinals

February 10, 2023 by Lee Epps

Three Spring Grove girls scored in double figures and three had strong rebounding results as the Lions turned away visiting LeRoy-Ostrander, 55-27, on Jan. 31. Spring Grove controlled the action throughout, outscoring the Cardinals 29-13 before halftime and 26-14 after the break.  improved to 8-11 (6-7 SEC), whereas the Cardinals (1-16, 1-12 SEC) went home still in search of a second win.

Kendal VanMinsel (11) and Lydia Solum exert double-team pressure on LeRoy-Ostrander’s Benita Nolt. Later, VanMinsel (5 rebounds, 3 assists) would leave after an injury. Solum would finish with 13 points and 9 rebounds.

Kylie Hammel blocked the Cardinals’ first shot, and things did not improve much for L-O, which finished with 25 turnovers. And when the Cards were able to shoot, they shot a woeful 17% from the field. Addyson McHugh disrupted the L-O attack with 6 of the Lions’ 18 steals.

Lydia Solum hit 6 of 8 shots during a 13-point, 9-rebound performance while Hammel was also close to a double-double with another 13 points and 8 boards. Siri Konkel added 11 points, and Carlie Halverson grabbed 7 rebounds. Kendal VanMinsel collected 5 rebounds and 3 assists before leaving the action with an injury early in the second half.

Two players combined to score 24 of the Cardinals’ 27 points and secure half of their team’s rebounds. Senior Jordan Rundle led L-O scoring with 13 points along with 7 rebounds. Sophomore center Benita Nolt put in 11 points in addition to a game-high 10 boards.

Neither squad had success from 3-point range with the Lions hitting only 3 of 21 (14%) and the Cardinals going 1 for 14 (7%) from downtown. But Spring Grove was able to take the ball inside for 39 points, nearly twice that of the visitors’ 20 paint points.

It was the third straight win for Spring Grove in a series the Lion ladies dominate 60-12 after taking 39 of the last 40. There were no B-team or junior high games.
