Spring Grove had 18 fewer turnovers and 22 more shot attempts. But it was not enough to overcome 23 fewer rebounds, being outshot, 46% to 34%, from the field and a five-point deficit at the free throw line. Waukon (now 2-1), with a much larger enrollment, held on for a 66-63 home win, its sixth straight victory versus Spring Grove. While the Lions depended greatly on 3-point shots, the taller Indians were able to get the ball inside for a 45-to-29 scoring advantage in the lane.
Spring Grove led at halftime, 34-27, after netting 6 of 16 shots beyond the 3-point arc. After intermission, the Lions shot a woeful 1 for 14 from afar. Both teams sank seven 3-pointers, but Waukon did it with only 13 shots (54%), while the Lions needed 30 attempts (23%).
Still, Grove outscored the Indians from the field, 59-57, but the Indians earned five more free throws and hit five more (9 for 17, 53%) than did the Lions (4 for 12, 33%) in a three-point decision.
Kylie Hammel led Lion scoring with 19 points, while Siri Konkel and Kinley Soiney each added 14 points. Konkel also had 7 assists and 4 steals; Soiney had an all-around sterling stat line with 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Kendal VanMinsel put in 8 points to go with a caereer-high 4 steals and a team-high 9 rebounds.
Three Indians had double-doubles. Senior Breckan Stewart had a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Keira McCormick added 12 points, 11 rebounds while junior Reese McCormick had 12 points and 12 boards.
The Lions’ seven-point halftime lead disappeared while they were outscored 22-11 during the third quarter (Iowa plays quarters, Minnesota only halves). Grove battled back from a six-point deficit to pull even at 53-53. There would be two lead changes and three more tie scores during the final four minutes.
Waukon sealed the win with back-to-back fast-break baskets. The Lions hit only one of their final six shots from the field and only one of four late free throws. In the second half, the Indians hit more than of their half of their field goal attempts (16 for 30).
Waukon won the B-team game, 37-23. In junior high action versus Lansing Kee, Spring Grove took then eighth grade game, 35-32, and the seventh grade game, 30-14.
