The Houston girls scored the first nine points of the game and went on to win by nine points, 58-49. Spring Grove trailed by as many as 13 points and never got closer than six at Houston on Jan. 17. That critical start saw the Lions open with four missed shots and three turnovers while the Hurricanes hit three of their first four shots, including a pair of 3-pointers, with no turnovers. Spring Grove slipped a game below .500 at 6-7overall and 4-5 SEC.

Houston (5-9, 5-2 SEC) was most successful while taking the ball inside with both the dribble and the pass, resulting in the best 2-point shooting percentage (52%) of any Lion opponent this season. But the ‘Canes still outscored SG by only two points from the field. Seven of their ultimate nine-point margin came with strong 71% shooting from the foul line. where they hit as many free throws (12 for 17) as the Lions attempted (5 for 12, 42%).
Three Grove girls scored in double figures with Kylie Hammel netting 17 points while Emerson Ingvalson and Siri Konkel (4 assists) adding 10 points each. Lydia Solum took rebounding honors with 7 caroms. Houston countered with three-time all-conference Sydney Torgerson tossing in 28 points, none of which came with 3-point field goals.
The Hurricanes’ 12th straight win over Spring Grove was the first of their two conference meetings this winter. Houston also took the B-team game, 43-20, and the seventh grade game.
