Spring Grove girls cannot keep up with Grand Meadow

December 19, 2022 by Lee Epps Leave a Comment

Both the Spring Grove girls and Grand Meadow started slowly with turnovers and cold shooting. Both then began to take better care of the ball, but only Grand Meadow (3-0, 3-0 SEC) began to knock down shots and get to the free throw line. The Superlarks led by 12 points at halftime and would go on to win, 51-34, on Dec. 13 at Spring Grove (2-3, 1-3 SEC).

Coming off last year’s 23-win season, Grand Meadow still has the services of two all-conference standouts, 5-foot-11 daughters of head coach Ryan Queensland, senior Kendyl and sophomore Lauren, plus honorable mention senior Sydney Cotten. Lauren Queensland had game-highs with 18 points and 8 boards. No one else scored in double figures. Freshman Kylie Hammel led the Lions with 9 points (4 for 6 shooting) while sophomore Kendal VanMinsel collected 6 rebounds. Senior Addyson McHugh (5 points) had team bests with 3 steals and 2 assists (no turnovers).

The Larks outscored Grove 32 to 18 in the lane and also shot a hot 38% beyond the 3-point arc (5 for 13). For the second straight game, Spring Grove scoring started with a 3-point basket by McHugh, but the Lions finished only 2 for 12 (17%). The Superlarks more often got to the free throw line, where they hit 10 of 16 (63%), while the Lions went 4 for 12 (33%). Meadow played solid zone defense with only eight fouls.

The Lions handled the ball with an acceptable 14 turnovers, but the Larks were better with 15 assists and only 9 lost possessions. For the first time in five games, Spring Grove won a competitive rebound battle, 27 to 25.

It was the 11th straight win for Grand Meadow against Spring Grove, but the Lions still lead the all-time series, 36 to 32.

It was an evening sweep for the Larks, who won the B-team game, 31-26 and the seventh grade game, 24-6. Spring Grove does not have an eighth grade squad this season.
