Spring Grove girls cannot contain Cobras, ‘Canes

December 20, 2021 by Lee Epps

Houston Girls Basketball

The Spring Grove girls suffered a third straight lopsided loss to a larger school with a 70-38 setback against Class AA Triton at Dodge Center on Dec. 7. Two nights later, it was back to Class A competition, but the Lions could not contain defending conference champion Houston in a 58-32 road loss. It was the first-ever meeting with the Cobras but the 102nd clash with the Hurricanes. Spring Grove has dominated the all-time series, 84 wins to 18, but Houston has taken the last 10.

The Lions held early 3-2 leads in both road games but played from behind the rest of the way. In both contests, the Grove girls shot a better percentage from 3-point range than they did closer to the hoop. But both games were decided near the basket. Spring Grove was unable to prevent the opponents from taking the ball inside, Triton mostly with the pass and Houston primarily with the dribble.

Spring Grove ended the week with a 1-4 record (1-1 SEC) with all five games decided by wide margins. The Cobras (1-2) enjoyed their first win of the young season, while the Hurricanes improved to 2-1 (1-1 SEC).

Forty points was the winning total in both B-team games. The Spring Grove B-girls (1-2) won at Triton, 40-33, but fell at Houston, 40-32.

SG 38, at Triton 70
Brylee Iverson poured in 23 points to lead the Cobras. The athletic 6-foot-1 junior had 15 points at halftime; the Lions had only 14 at the break. Spring Grove was outscored by only one point during the second half, 25-24. But Triton led 45-14 at halftime.

The Lions had success getting to the foul line for 23 free throws, while limiting their hosts to only four attempts (4 for 4). But Spring Grove hit only 11 free throws (48%) and was more accurate from 3-point land (42%, 5 for 12) than closer in (24%, 6 for 25). The Cobras did not need either 3-pointers or free throws while doubling-up the Lions in the lane, 42 points to 21.

Lydia Solum hit all three of her field goal attempts and both of her free throws. With eight points, she shared Spring Grove scoring honors with eighth grade point guard Siri Konkel. Solum shared team rebounding honors with freshman Kendal Van Minsel, each with six boards.

Triton is not as young as Spring Grove, but the Cobras started three sophomores and two juniors. Only one senior came off the bench.
