Class A state-ranked No. 3 Spring Grove led No. 13 Southland for most of the second half, but Noah Bauer hit a 3-pointer with under two seconds to play in the Rebels’ euphoric 52-50 home win. Inbounding with only 1.3 seconds left, SG amazingly got off a shot (that missed the mark).
The score was tied seven times; there were seven lead changes. Grove trailed by eight points early (10-2) but rallied to lead by 11 just before taking a 31-27 lead into halftime. The Lions led 50-45 with 4:09 to play, but missed their final five shots and two late free throws. The Rebels scored the final seven points of the first half and the final seven points of the second half.
SG allowed the Rebels only six free throws (4 for 6) and had only seven turnovers, Southland only 11. But the Rebels shot 43% to Lions’ 35%, and Spring Grove hit only 5 of 25 shots (20%) beyond the 3-point arc.
Jaxon Strinmoen scored a game-high 22 points; Ben Udstuen double-doubled with 15 points, 10 rebounds. Ethan Crouch had a career-high 6 assists, no turnovers. SEC East champ Spring Grove (15-2 18-2) lost for only the second time, both versus SEC West Division leader Southland (14-2, 18-3), which had won earlier at SG, 58-49.
The Lion B-team also lost to the Rebels for the second time, 43-26. The eighth graders completed a season sweep of Southland, 37-33. The seventh grade game again went to Southland, 40-36.
