Spring Grove Boys Handle the Ball and Schaffer

February 22, 2024 by Lee Epps

The Spring boys played with only two turnovers, a season-best and likely a program record while subduing visiting Schaeffer academy, 67-44. Jaxon Strinmoen scored a career-record 29 points along with 9 rebounds, 7 steals and 2 assists. Elijah Solum and Ben Udstuen each added 12 points and 5 rebounds. Neither had a turnover with Solum passing out 5 assists and Udstuen 2. Ethan Crouch (6 points) had another 5 helpers. Ethan VonSchepen led Schaeffer with 20 points, 7 rebounds.

There were five lead changes during the first half. Schaeffer led 19-18 before SG scored 13 of the last 15 points heading into the break with a 31-21 advantage. Grove led by eight (40-32) before a 12-to-2 run created a little more comfort. Crouch had two assists and a rebound basket as SG scored the game’s final 10 points, while Schaeffer went scoreless over the final six minutes.

Both teams shot well (SG 42% and SA 47%), but with 17 fewer turnovers and eight more offensive rebounds, Grove shot more often. At the foul line, SG hit 9 of 9 free throws and the visitors 7 of 8.

Spring Grove has won the last eight games against Schaeffer, including a 68-36 decision in the season opener for Grove. SG improved to 13-1, 11-1 SEC while the visiting Lions left at 7-9, 4-7 SEC. Schaeffer does not have a B-team.
