The Spring Grove boys overcame first-half turnovers and then dominated the second half to turn away visiting Houston, 64-38. Ben Udstuen had game-highs with 17 points and 8 rebounds. The junior forward hit 5 of 7 shots from the field and 6 of 9 free throws. Jaxon Strinmoen (6 assists) contributed 14 points along with 8 points each from Bryce Berns and Elijah Solum as the state-ranked No. 12 Lions (23-3) extended their winning streak against the Hurricanes (15-11) to eight games. The Grove guys have taken 63 of the last 65 games in the series they now lead 108 wins to 54.
SEC East Division champion Spring Grove closed its conference campaign at 18-2 with an eight-game lead over division co-runners-up, Houston (10-10) and Mabel-Canton (10-10).
However, unlike the teams’ previous meeting (a SG 82-34 win), the Hurricanes were still in the game at halftime. Spring Grove came in averaging 11 turnovers a game but lost possession 11 times in the first half alone in the rematch with Houston. The Lions led 24-19 at halftime, but with only six turnovers after the break, they outscored the ‘Canes 40-19 in the second half. Grove went 17 possessions without a turnover while scoring 17 unanswered points at the start of 25-to-4 scoring run. The Lion defense came up with 6 blocked shots, 3 from Ethan Crouch, and 18 steals, including 5 thefts by Jacob Olerud.
The Lions shot a strong 49% from the field, including a good 38% (8 for 21) from 3-point land. Houston was effective with 2-point shots (48%) but floundered at only 17% (3 for 18) beyond the 3-point arc and 17% from the free throw line (1 for 6). Morgan Rohweder led Houston scoring with 13 points.
The Lion B-team (18-4) also completed a regular-season sweep with a 66-27 victory. In junior high action, the ‘Canes took the eighth grade game, 40-39, and the Lions won the seventh grade game.
