Spring Grove boys grill Grand Meadow

January 22, 2023 by Lee Epps Leave a Comment

Jaxon Strinmoen put in a career-high 26 points, and Elijah Solum netted another 20 along with 9 rebounds to spur the Spring Grove boys past Grand Meadow, 64-27, on Jan. 10. The Lions (6-1, 4-0 SEC) relied on defense (17 steals) and ball-handling (17 assists, 8 turnovers) and turned in their most dominant rebounding performance of the season (33 boards to 16).

Ethan Crouch will prevail in this rebound battle with Grand Meadow defenders Hunter Dimick (3) and Alex Lopez.

The winless Superlarks (0-12, 0-7 SEC) scored first, but then the Lions launched a 15-to-1 run en route to a commanding 33-14 halftime count. GM opened the second-half scoring as well, but Spring Grove galloped away with 23-to-3 scoring streak to extend its winning streak over the the Larks to 46 games, dating back to a one-point loss in 1999.

With 25 turnovers against the usual aggressive Spring Grove defense, Grand Meadow aired up only 37 shots. Neither squad was hesitant to fire away from afar, but both had only moderate 3-point success with the Lions hitting 7 of 30 (23%) and the Larks only 3 of 14 (21%). Both teams shot well at the foul line, but neither got there very often. With only 15 fouls whistled all game, SG hit 7 of 8 free throws and GM 6 of 8.

Grand Meadow has no B-team and no seventh grade team this year. The Lion eighth graders (2-2) won handily, 48-14.
