Spring Grove boys enjoy runaway road win over Rebels

January 12, 2023 by Lee Epps Leave a Comment

The Spring Grove boys pummeled Southland with 3-point shooting and a swarming, long-armed defense that limited the Rebels to a season-low 33 points while forcing 25 turnovers – almost twice the number of the Rebels’ 13 field goals. Five different Lions hit treys as half of the SG baskets were launched beyond the 3-point arc where the Lions shot a season-best 46% while sinking a season-high 11 treys.

Southland (3-4, 3-2 SEC) shot a strong 42% from the field but with all the turnovers, did not shoot often enough. Meanwhile, SG (5-1, 3-0 SEC) led by 25 points at halftime and by as many as 40 in the second half. Elijah Solum tossed in 26 points while hitting 10 of 13 shots, including four 3-balls. Tysen Grinde had 10 points along with 5 assists and 5 steals. Caleb Griffin added 8 points.

Spring Grove finished with 15 turnovers, but the primary playing rotation lost possession only 6 times before reserves played the final 10 minutes.

The Rebels defended with only five fouls; Spring Grove’s two free throws (Solum 2 for 2) were the fewest for the Lions in their last 35 games.

The Lion B-team (4-1) lost for the first time this season, 45-37. There was a junior high split with Southland taking the eighth grade game, 55-41, and Spring Grove winning the seventh grade game.
