Spring Grove boys bury Burros early

January 2, 2024 by Lee Epps Leave a Comment

The Spring Grove boys, for the second straight game, scored the first 18 points of a runaway home rout. The 64-30 decision was the Lions’ 21st consecutive victory over Lanesboro and 40th straight Southeast Conference win as the Boys in Black improved to 5-0 (4-0 SEC). The Burros returned home at 2-6 (2-4 SEC) after their Dec. 22 setback.

Four Lions scored in double figures, led by Ben Udstuen with a career-high 18 points (7 for 8 shooting) to go with 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Jaxon Strinmoen was close to a double-double with 16 points and 9 rebounds plus 4 assists and a game-high 4 steals. Isaac Nerstad added a career-high 13 points and Jacob Olerud 12.

Wade Grinde’s guys shot a good 32% from 3-point range (8 for 25) and buoyed by 17 fast-break points, shot a sizzling 68% inside the arc and 50% from the field overall. Swamped by the aggressive Spring Grove defense, Lanesboro was limited to 27% shooting from the field and hit only 2 of 9 free throws (SG 6 for 10). Will Harvey, with nine points, led a balanced Lanesboro scoring effort.

The Burros competed best beneath the backboards with 26 rebounds, compared to 27 caroms for the Lions. Lanesboro is a veteran club with a half-dozen seniors, four of whom started along with sophomore Levi Rogers.

The Lion B-team (3-0) raced out to a 14-2 lead and won 53-24. Kolton Nerstad scored 18 points and passed out 3 assists with no turnovers. Devon Williams had a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double.
